Adelaide Central Market has welcomed a bold new Producer in Residence, the collaboration between Electric Head and Little Bang Brewing Co. You might have heard of Little Bang and tasted some of their wonderful beer, but condiment producers Electric Head have taken a graphic and art-driven approach to making ultra-creative flavour in a bottle.
Pop into the markets until Saturday 13 September to try one of their wildly different sauces, all vegan and completely unique. The stall offers bottles to buy as gifts, flavours to try, and on Fridays and Saturdays, hot chips paired with your condiment of choice. They’re also stocked with Little Bang Brewing’s hottest brews to take away.
The project is led by Ryan Davidson, co-founder and Creative Director of Little Bang Brewing, and artist Matt O’Connor, who was Head of Design at Little Bang. Together, they have translated their playful, video game-inspired aesthetic into a line of sauces that are as visually striking as they are flavourful. Michelin Star Chef Andrew Wandless has also contributed to the project, adding his culinary expertise to the mix.
As a hot sauce lover and passionate music fan, I can’t help but draw parallels with the innovative ‘fictional’ band Gorillaz, a collaboration between Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, who also brought their project to life visually.
“We wanted to create something that pushes boundaries, both in taste and design,” Ryan says. “Matt and I come from the video game industry, so we like things loud, wacky, and unique. This is about art on the bottle and big, punchy flavours.”
Each sauce is crafted with a mix of bold ingredients, playful branding, and about half a dozen chillies packed into each of the spicier bottles. The range is completely vegan and includes flavours Green Chilli and Lime Taco Sauce, Funky Beer Mustard, Spicy Dill Pickle Ketchup, and the ramen-inspired Slick Ramen Noodle Sauce, Ryan’s personal favourite.
This flavour was inspired by Ryan’s wife. “She joked that Trident and Maggi stocks were apparently soaring during the recession because they make 2-minute noodles and that’s what everyone’s living on.”
The flavour also hit close to home. “I’m really passionate about noodles,” Ryan says with a laugh, “And I like to do them right. A great sauce has some soluble components and some aromatic oils that float on top. Any great bowl of noodles has to have an oil slick on top. That’s where the name came from.”
For Ryan, the project is a labour of love. “It’s about friendship, art, and expression. We want to do something different that has big personality and makes people happy. God knows we could use a bit more of that!”
The Electric Head x Little Bang Brewing Producer in Residence stall will be at Adelaide Central Market until 13 September. Bottles are also available online and from Little Bang Brewing Co.
