South Australia has a number of amazing, historic, underground tunnels and caves. From the depths of Penfolds at Magill Estate, to the tunnels used to safely cart gold in and out of the Treasury building in the city, many of these locations are now being used for incredible, memorable functions.

One you may not be so familiar with however, is McLaren Vale’s best kept secret – Maxwell Wines’ enchanting, 100 year old Lime Cave.

Behind the creaking doors of what appears to be a tool shed, is the entrance to 50 meters of a hand-carved lime cave, dug over a century ago in 1916.

The cave was originally dug by just one man to cultivate mushrooms, and after sitting empty with no real purpose for many years, it has been reclaimed by the Maxwell family – to both grow mushrooms on site to supply their incredible restaurant, and to host unique, intimate events.

As part of the Winery Heritage Tour, you can enjoy a sneak peek into the rarely seen 100 year old cave as well as the behind the scenes of the historic winery and their wine making process, and even indulge in the opportunity to taste their wines straight from the barrel as they mature.

This tour is available for 2 to 6 people at a time at $90 per person, or $295 per person with the additional fine dining lunch experience in the award winning Maxwell Wines restaurant, which champions local seasonal produce and boasts hilly vineyard views.

Maxwell Wines once offered the opportunity to experience their wine tastings and sit-down dining experiences within the lime cave, but instead you can now book the magical subterranean venue for private events.

With the exclusive lime cave event your group will enjoy canapés and wines while learning about the history of the cave, before indulging in multiple courses seated within the Maxwell Wines restaurant. This experience costs $350 per person with a minimum of ten attendees.
