Winnie and Archie lead the pack as South Australia’s top dog names for 2025

Australia’s top dog names have been revealed for 2025, with South Australia adding some new names to the list.

New data from Pet Insurance Australia has revealed the country’s most popular dog names for 2025 — and South Australians have gone their own way when it comes to naming their furry family members.

While Luna and Teddy hold the national crowns for most popular female and male names, respectively, here in SA it’s Winnie and Archie taking the lead. The data shows locals leaning toward gentle, human-style names, mirroring a national trend that reflects how closely Australians now identify their pets as part of the family.

“Names like Luna, Daisy, Teddy and Milo feel warm and affectionate — you could easily find them on a kindergarten roll,” says Pet Insurance Australia spokesperson Nadia Crighton. “It shows just how loved our pets really are.”

Across South Australia, Winnie, Daisy, Molly, Bella and Maggie were the most common female names, while Archie, Louis, Milo, Tank and Winston topped the list for males — a mix of vintage favourites and fun modern picks.

Pet Insurance Australia’s report highlights several key trends shaping how Aussies are naming their dogs: the influence of pop culture (think The Lion King’s Nala and Simba), the rise of “soft” endings like -ie and -a, and a love of nostalgic, old-fashioned names such as Jack, Beau and Millie.

“Our pets are family, and their names reflect the joy, personality and love they bring into our homes,” Nadia adds.

So whether it’s Winnie the wonder pup or Archie the backyard boss, one thing’s clear — South Australians have plenty of heart when it comes to naming their dogs.
