Wirra Wirra Show Off Their New Cellar Door In Time For Summer

Just a few months ago, Wirra Wirra finished renovations on their gorgeous McLaren Vale home. Time to make weekend plans we think!

Wirra Wirra’s Church Block is one of South Australia’s most iconic wines; a soft, smooth and very easy drinking Cabernet Shiraz Merlot blend that has been gracing our wine glasses with it’s presence for many memorable years.

Just a few months ago, Wirra Wirra finished renovations on their gorgeous McLaren Vale home, which is set to follow in their flagship wine’s footsteps by becoming one of the iconic cellar doors of the region. We were lucky enough to be invited out for a visit recently and our conclusion is that we think it’s well worth venturing out for a lingering look.

Wood and timber still feature strongly throughout the 100 year old cellar door and tastings are available every day of the week, but to help you linger longer, Wirra Wirra now offer eight different behind-the-scenes tours. With everything from blending your own replica of Church Block to a sausage making master class with Feast! Fine Foods’ Richard Gunner, there is most definitely something for everyone. The most popular tour so far seems to be their Shiraz Revolution Tour. Available for groups of two to 20 people, this tour takes you through a tasting of five or Wirra Wirra’s best shiraz wines. The tasting, which takes place in their original cellar door overlooking the barrel room, includes a museum tasting, platters from local McLaren Vale chocolate artisan Four Winds, and the chance to ring their historic three quarter tonne Angelus Bell, which we can attest, is an awful lot of fun.

Wirra WirraAs part of the recent refurbishment of their beautiful ironstone buildings, Wirra Wirra now also offers a relaxed, locally focused café dining option. Warm and welcoming, Harry’s Deli provides simple meals that celebrate the region and our state, which can be enjoyed either inside the cosy café or outside in their new sunny alfresco dining area. No corkage is charged if you wish to enjoy a bottle of wine with lunch or as an accompaniment to their generous cheese platters but whatever you do, our hottest food-related tip is to make sure you save room for a brownie and a cup of coffee at the end of your meal.

Chocolate artisan Four Winds supplies Wirra Wirra with the absolute definition of a melt-in-your-mouth moment by way of some of the most luscious brownies we’ve ever tried. Seriously, they alone are worth the trip. And what better to accompany such a glorious treat than Wirra Wirra’s own house blend coffee? Local coffee legends Dawn Patrol worked closely with Wirra Wirra to create a special blend of coffee made to aromatically match the iconic Church Block, and we think they’ve done a brilliant job. The blend, which is made exclusively for Wirra Wirra, is aptly named Church Blend and, if you’re open to suggestions as to how to take your caffeine, we strongly recommend a double ristretto, which perfectly shows off the flavour and the aromatics of the blend.

If you’d prefer to bring your own supplies, the team at Wirra Wirra welcomes you to enjoy the grassy grounds surrounding their cellar door and have even provided BBQ facilities to make things even easier.

The team at Wirra Wirra have thought of just about everything to make their cellar door a go-to destination for locals and visitors alike. The next time you’re McLaren Vale bound, we highly recommend spending some time at Wirra Wirra to experience a truly iconic winery of the region.
