As we transition from the final week of spring and enter the first week of summer, the weather is set to really start heating up, sooner rather than later. Currently, South Australians are being warned to brace for what could be one of our hottest summers in years.
In anticipation of a highly busy summer season in the riverlands, South Australia Police, SA State Emergency Service and the Department of Infrastructure and Transport are hosting an informative community event at Mannum this Sunday 1 December.
SAPOL Murray Mallee Local Service Area Superintendent Cindy Healey said the event will feature safety information for the public, giveaways and Marine Safety and SES vessels on display.
“We know over the coming months the river will attract thousands of visitors to enjoy a range of swimming and boating activities,” Superintendent Healey said.
“This event is a great opportunity to speak to agencies about the rules on the river and ensure you have all the necessary safety equipment.
To ensure that everyone can enjoy one of the most scenic regions of South Australia, Police will also be more present in the riverlands over the summer months, checking that boaters have the appropriate licenses, aren’t drink driving, and are sharing the river responsibly.
Department for Infrastructure and Transport, Manager Marine Safety and Compliance at the Gordon Panton said there is no room for complacency on the water when it comes to safety.
“A well-equipped boat is a safe boat, and we encourage everyone to plan ahead, gear up and stay safe this summer,” Mr Panton said.
“Lifejackets save lives and are the most important piece of safety equipment, especially for children, but they only work if you’re wearing it.
“Ensure your lifejacket is to standard, the right fit and in top condition so you are not caught out in an emergency.”
South Australian State Emergency Service South Region Commander David O’Shannessy encouraged people to enjoy the water safely this summer.
“We always suggest people apply basic safety when using the river such as checking local weather conditions forecasts before planning their water activities,’’ he said.
“The SES also encourages people to inspect all safety equipment on boats before taking to the water, always wear a lifejacket when on the river and plan to undertake water activities with a ‘buddy’ or in groups when possible.”
The event will take place at Mary-Anne Reserve, Mannum from 11am-3pm.
