Tomorrow marks the official start of the festive season here in Adelaide, with the annual Christmas Pageant heading to Adelaide’s CBD. With the event expected to draw a crowd exceeding 300,000, attendees are advised to note substantial road closures throughout the city, ensuring safe passage for both viewers and participants during the festivities.
Starting from early morning till afternoon, several major roads will be inaccessible. Key closures include King William Street from South Terrace to Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, entirely closed from 5 am to 1 pm. Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga will also follow the same schedule. Hindmarsh Square/Mukata will be shut down from midnight through to 1 pm, affecting the stretch between Grenfell and Pirie Streets. Additional road closures will affect Grote, Wakefield, North Terrace, Pirie Street, Angas Street, Gouger Street, Currie Street and others throughout the morning.
The Pageant route remains unchanged, commencing at South Terrace, advancing onto King William Street, then down the western edge of Tarntanyangga, moving through Reconciliation Plaza, and along Wakefield Street up to Pulteney Street, rounding off near the Town Hall on North Terrace.
Charles Mountain, RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure, shared, “The Christmas Pageant brings huge numbers to the city each year so road closures will be in place tomorrow morning to keep everyone safe.
“On-street parking will be as rare as a white Christmas, so check for off-street options and allow plenty of extra time if you’re driving to the Pageant. Let public transport be your Christmas miracle with free services and extra trips running throughout the morning – the Adelaide Metro website has a full list of the additional services.”
From 6am to 2pm, all bus, train, and tram services under Adelaide Metro will be free, enhancing accessibility and convenience for families. This includes additional buses and trains, attending to the needs of the large number of visitors. It is also noted that tram services will not operate on the eastern section of North Terrace or King William Street during the morning hours as these form part of the Pageant route.
Pageant organisers remind those attending to set up only after roads have officially closed to avoid any safety hazards. Additionally, with many children and families around, they have stressed the importance of careful driving and remaining undistracted by the festivities for those not attending the event.
For those planning their trip to the Christmas Pageant, detailed information on road closures and transportation services is available on the official Christmas Pageant website and the Adelaide Metro website.
