South Australia is home to some amazing architecture – just look to any number of our buildings including the Beehive Corner Building, the SAHMRI and the Seppelt Family Mausoleum.

This year’s South Australian Architecture Awards, held by the Australian Institute of Architects, are getting under way this weekend where the best of SA’s architects will present their entries to judges.

Presentations will be open to the public, giving design and architecture enthusiasts a chance to learn about the ethos, drivers and constraints behind some of the biggest architecture projects delivered in Adelaide and regional SA over the past year.

More than 50 entries have been received across categories ranging from public architecture, interior architecture, commercial architecture, heritage, residential, urban design and education.

Some of the projects that will be included are ones which you’ve kept your eye on for years which have finally come to fruition.

One of those is the 8-year restoration of the State Heritage-listed Goodman Building, located on Hackney Road at the eastern gate of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, which was the former Municipal Tramways Trust (MTT).

This year’s nominations will also include the new Adelaide City Skate Park, the conversion of Regent Theatre into the Dymocks bookstore, a contemporary home in North Adelaide named Frangipani House, a sculpture outside the Australian Space Discovery Centre in Lot Fourteen, and a new office building at 83 Pirie Street.

There will be winners selected by a multidisciplinary jury of design experts across multiple categories announced on July 13.

There will also be a people’s choice award to allow the public to recognise the project they feel adds the most to the city.

The display of entries and presentations to judges will be held at the Australian Institute of Architects and The Office for Design and Architecture SA (ODASA) in Leigh St, Adelaide.
