Wizard of Oz scavenger hunt comes to the CBD just in time for the school holidays

Sandpit’s digital tour technology enables users to scan imagery with their phones, encouraging them to amble around the streets and rediscover their love of Adelaide.

Click your heels three times and head down to the city and find this iconic fairytale being brought to life.

Searching for the Wizard of Oz is an interactive, scavenger hunt style tour based on the original L. Frank Baum story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, created by the award-winning experience design studio Sandpit.

The tour invites visitors to ‘follow the yellow brick road’ through multiple locations across the city, locate beautifully illustrated posters and scan them to unlock the next chapter of the story, tracking down the elusive Wizard. Local businesses will be taking part with the use of their shopfronts.

Sandpit’s digital tour technology enables users to scan imagery with their phones, encouraging them to amble around the streets and rediscover their love of Adelaide.

The tour will start at the City Library, although visitors will be able to join the fun at any point using any of the six posters. Characters are brought to life with animations and visitors will have to decode cryptic clues that will eventually unlock the location of the Wizard. A one-on-one encounter with the Wizard will complete the experience and people will find their way home back into the comfort of the city.

The posters will tell the story we all know and love but with a new twist: told entirely from the perspective of Toto. Scanning the posters will reveal what Toto really thinks of the many beloved characters from the original story.

Acclaimed designers Sam Barratt and Chris Edser who created the famous “Heaps Good” t-shirts, which later became a brand for the state, will be creating the artwork around the city.

Sandpit Co-founder and Creative Director Sam Haren expressed his excitement for the upcoming activation.

“We are thrilled to be given the opportunity to create a unique and immersive visitor experience for ADL Unleashed. Bringing such a timeless classic to life on the streets of Adelaide will be an adventure for visitors of all ages,” Sam says.

Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor echoes the brilliance of the project.

“There’s no place like home and the Searching for the Wizard of Oz trail is a brilliant way to explore the city.

“Follow the (virtual) yellow brick road, click your heels together and experience the magic of the Wizard of Oz on the streets of Adelaide,” Sandy says.

The Lord Mayor will open the tour with a real-life Dorothy from 12:30 pm tomorrow. The yellow brick road will be lined with real flowers placed by a local artist that creates a full scene of poppies both real and created.

Searching for the Wizard of Oz is part of ADL Unleashed, a joint initiative with the Government of South Australia, Adelaide Economic Development Agency and Adelaide City Council and is designed to build visitation for city businesses.
