The Wombat Awareness Organisation, known for their tireless efforts in rescuing and rehabilitating South Australian wombats, recently received a jaw-dropping $100,000 donation during their fundraising drive.

The generous contribution was made by a supporter who believes in their mission to expand their wombat sanctuary to a new 110-acre home. Expressing their gratitude on Facebook, the organisation thanked their supporters and expressed hope of reaching their goal of $500,000 by July 30th. They’re now just $81,000 away from securing the new sanctuary, where wombats can thrive in a protected environment.

“Last week, an overwhelmingly generous woman donated a jaw dropping 100k towards our fundraiser to expand our sanctuary,” The Wombat Awareness Organisation posted to their Facebook.

“I feel she put us back in the running for a jolly good chance at reaching our target by the deadline of July 30th – in 9 days!

“If you are one of the 3500 donors that has carried us this far, thank you, thank you so very much.

“We are just under 500k which is astonishing and indicative of the love and support you have for these beloved darlings. Words can not say how appreciated you are.

“This week, we need urgent help to bring this vital project home. If we do, the wombats will have a new 110 acre home, our sanctuary doors will remain open and a whole new future awaits us.

“We have 81k to go. 81k to create a future for these darling kids. All of them saved from starvation, all of them digging machines and ready to go and create a new future for the many, many wombats coming our way.”

For over 20 years, the Wombat Awareness Organisation has been a lifeline for wombats in need. With climate change impacting their habitats and increasing the number of animals that need care, the organisation must expand its sanctuary to continue providing the marsupials the best and safest haven.

Of particular concern is the Southern Hairy-nosed wombat, facing risk of extinction due to climate change and human activities, making the Wombat Awareness Organisation’s ongoing efforts in protecting and rehabilitating wombats more important than ever.

Currently managing two sanctuaries, including a 400-acre property that protects wild wombats, the organisation has transformed houses into wombat-friendly environments where rescued wombats receive care before being released into a supportive and protected setting.

With the communities support and donations, they aim to purchase a new ‘release site’ to accommodate more rehabilitated wombats and provide specialised care for those with special needs. The fundraising helps fund medical care, rehabilitation, and advocacy efforts to protect the animals in the wild.

Founded in 2006 and based in Flaxley in the Adelaide Hills, the Wombat Awareness Organisation operates as a non-profit organisation, relying on the generosity of donors to carry out their mission. Their commitment lies in providing every wombat with a loving and supporting environment, whether within their sanctuary or in the wild.

Anyone can contribute to support these wombats for future generations and help the Wombat Awareness Organisation in their mission; even a small contribution can have a significant impact!
