Work has officially commenced on the $6 million expansion of the Crafers Park ‘n’ Ride, aimed at making public transport more convenient and accessible for commuters in the Adelaide Hills. It’s a part of the Government’s $19 million commitment to improve transport to support growth in Mount Barker and the Adelaide Hills.

The expansion project will provide an additional 85 parking spaces, adding to the existing infrastructure.

“There are 39 spaces at Crafers currently, so by adding 85 new spaces we’ll be greatly increasing the capacity of the Park ‘n’ Ride, helping make public transport a more attractive option for Adelaide Hills commuters,” Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis says.

The new Park ‘n’ Ride facility will be constructed to the southeast of the current Crafers Park ‘n’ Ride facility, adjacent to the Crafers off-ramp and South Eastern Freeway.

The Crafers site is strategically located as the closest Park ‘n’ Ride facility to the city in the Adelaide Hills. This upgrade aims to encourage public transport usage by offering a safe and secure location for commuters to leave their cars before boarding buses into the city.

In addition to the 85 new car parking spaces, the expanded Crafers Park ‘n’ Ride will also include accessible spaces and motorcycle parking, providing a total of more than 120 parking spaces. The project will also enhance safety and security with new lighting and CCTV cameras, as well as the addition of shared use paths and landscaping.

“Park ‘n’ Ride sites are a vital piece of our public transport offering, allowing secure and convenient locations to leave the car before jumping on a bus to complete your journey,” Koutsantonis says.

“I am pleased to see work get underway on this expansion just as new bus services commence in the Hills – it shows how serious we are about improving public transport options for Hills communities.”

The timing of this expansion coincides with the introduction of nearly 600 new bus services operating in the Adelaide Hills. Among these services are the T840 routes from Mount Barker, passing through the Crafers Park ‘n’ Ride, and providing convenient trips to the city every 15 minutes on weekdays between 9 am and 3 pm.

The Crafers Park ‘n’ Ride expansion and the increased bus services are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to meet the growing demand for public transport in the Hills communities. Importantly, the existing Park ‘n’ Ride facility will remain operational throughout the construction process, with completion anticipated by mid-2024.
