Construction has begun on a major project to improve the junction of Brighton Road and Edwards Street in South Brighton, a move aimed at significantly enhancing road safety and public transport efficiency. This initiative forms part of the $30 million Brighton Road Intersection Improvements project, jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian Governments.
The upgrade includes the installation of traffic lights and a signalised pedestrian and cyclist crossing, promising safer and more accessible roads for all users. Approximately 20 jobs will be supported over the construction period, underscoring the project’s contribution to the local economy.
Key features of the upgrade include a new dedicated right-turn lane on Edwards Street to facilitate smoother access to the Brighton Central Shopping Centre and local businesses, especially during peak times. Public transport will see improvements with the relocation of bus stop 37 (west) just north of the junction and the introduction of a new bus stop 37 (east) south of the junction.
Further enhancements include upgraded LED lighting, new kerbing, gutters, resurfaced road pavements, and fresh line marking. After community consultations, the Pedestrian Actuated Crossing south of Gregory Street will be retained, reflecting the project’s community-focused approach.
Most of the construction work is scheduled for weeknights between 7pm and 6am to minimize disruptions, with completion expected in the third quarter of 2024. Despite temporary closures and speed restrictions, pedestrian access and local business access will be maintained, ensuring the community remains connected throughout the upgrade process.
Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said that investments like the Australian Government’s $15 million for the Brighton Road Intersection Improvements show the government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure.
“This upgrade will be a significant step to improving road safety for drivers in Adelaide, especially during peak hour traffic.”
South Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis said “We are committed to continuing to work with the Australian Government to deliver infrastructure projects that benefit the wider community.”
“These new traffic lights, pedestrian crossing and other works will also improve access to local businesses.”
“We thank local residents and businesses for their patience while these works are undertaken and we are making every effort to minimise any inconvenience, including undertaking majority of the works at night.”
Federal Member for Boothby Louise Miller-Frost said “I am delighted to see joint funding between the Australian and South Australian governments providing more and better connections and travel flow along Brighton Road.”
“I look forward to seeing works progress and the benefits flow for the community.”
“The Edwards Street Brighton Road junction is a really busy one. This upgrade will mean local residents and those doing their weekly shopping will be able to get on and off Brighton Road faster and more safely.”
