Adelaide has become home to the world’s first URBN SHANX, a new 18-hole mini golf concept bringing hidden pipes, loop-de-loops and classic putt-putt nostalgia to the northern suburbs.
The space is now open at Bowland, a family-run bowling alley in Salisbury. Bowland owners Adam, his mother Belinda and sister April, are excited to be showcasing the world’s first compact URBN SHANX course.
“It’s an old school mini golf course with lots of different obstacles, which the normal SHANX courses don’t have,” said Adam.
Unlike the existing SHANX courses at Regency Park and Little Para, which recreate traditional golf on a smaller scale, URBN SHANX is designed to bring back the obstacle-filled putt-putt many Australians grew up playing. Hidden pipes, loop-de-loops, ramps and shortcuts create a faster, more playful experience packed with surprises.
For Adam and his family, bringing the world-first concept to Bowland marks an exciting new chapter. After opening last Saturday, the course has been busy every day, with plenty of locals already returning for another round.
“I’ve had people come in three different times already to play.”
Whirly birds, cubby houses and skateboarding ramps are just some of the obstacles players will encounter throughout the course. Naturally, the course also pays tribute to its Bowland home.
“We’ve got some bowling themed ones too,” Adam said.
Inspired by Melbourne’s Hosier Lane, the course recreates the feel of an urban laneway with vibrant graffiti, colourful artwork and plenty of personality.
Adam said Bowland had around 350 square metres of unused space behind the bowling alley, making it the perfect site for the compact new concept. The compact format was specifically designed for venues with limited space, allowing family entertainment centres, bowling alleys and leisure venues to fit a full 18-hole course into areas as small as 350 square metres.
The new attraction also gives visitors another reason to extend their trip to Bowland, with families able to combine a round of mini golf with ten-pin bowling, arcade games and a visit to the centre’s café.
The Salisbury installation is intended to be the blueprint for future URBN SHANX venues across Australia, with the creators already searching for more locations to roll out the new concept.
