World premiere of new LEGO® exhibition, RELICS: A New World Rises is headed for Adelaide in 2023

The new show was created by LEGO® Masters winners Jackson Harvey and Alex Towler and is set in a future where LEGO® minifigures have risen from the debris.

The South Australian Museum is thrilled to present the world premiere of RELICS: A New World Rises an exhibition by LEGO® Masters winners Jackson Harvey and Alex Towler.

Set in a future long after humanity’s reign, RELICS takes visitors to a world where LEGO® minifigures have risen from the debris to build intricate civilisations in discarded and forgotten objects once inhabited or used by humans.

Justine van Mourik, Deputy Director of Engagement at the South Australian Museum explains how RELICS explores an imagined future where LEGO® minifigures have taken over the world that humans have left behind.

“RELICS features a collection of old and forgotten objects that we are all familiar with like a vintage refrigerator, a cryonics facility and a grandfather clock – however, these items have now been inhabited by different LEGO® mini figures who have made these objects their home.”

“The Museum is so excited to be premiering RELICS: A New World Rises which opens to the public on Saturday 4 March. I think no matter your age we all have a nostalgic memory of LEGO® and this exhibition takes us away from reality and into a wonderful imaginary universe,” Ms van Mourik added.

Thinking far beyond the bricks, creators Jackson Harvey and Alex Towler use their masterful design, engineering and visual arts skills to fuse found items with colourful LEGO® bricks to weave intricate narratives that reflect our world in a new light.

They reflected on the exhibition and what it means to them, explaining that the exhibition explores a real sense of playfulness and fun through storytelling.

“The LEGO® minifigures are the plastic puppets of our stories, and we’ve had so much fun constructing hundreds of narratives with them. We hope people can find these stories and create some of their own,” Jackson Harvey said.

Co-creator Alex Towler added that RELICS really inspired him to look at the world in a different way. “Things that we might consider to be rubbish or useless, or forgotten, have been given a whole new life. It’s a fun way to be creative.”

RELICS is an interactive, engaging, and inspiring art exhibition, combining real-world objects with detailed LEGO® creations to connect with the audiences’ understanding of expression, sustainability, and connection.

RELICS: A New World Rises opens on Saturday 4 March and runs until 23 July 2023.
