Hot chips, kebab lamb or chicken, chili, barbecue sauce, and garlic––what others call “halal packs” are Adelaide’s AB.
The much-loved dish has both dubious origins (with both North Adelaide Burger Bar and Blue and White Café on O’Connell Street claiming ownership of its inception) and questions surrounding its name (“AB” stands for afterbirth, abortion, or atomic bomb depending on who you ask).
One thing is for sure, though: Adelaide has some great options for the mysterious meal. Here’s where to get it.
One of the two eateries amid the “who started AB?” war, North Adelaide Burger Bar has been serving up AB for years. In addition to massive plates of the loaded hot chips, they also pride themselves on being a great spot for late night eats.
Find the North Adelaide Burger Bar at 51 O’Connell Street, North Adelaide.
The other contender in the war on AB is Blue and White Café, an aptly named O’Connell Street café with bright blue framing. For one of the city’s original AB slingers, be sure to head to this spot.
Find Blue and White Café at 43 O’Connell Street, North Adelaide.
Two Greek Boys, Unley
Two Greek Boys in Unley says their dish is the “best in Adelaide,” and the Unley eatery has made the dish even crazier, offering one that feeds 4-6 people.
Find the eateries at 113 Unley Road, Unley.
Torrensville’s Fat Chicken has a range of burgers, schnitzels, seafood and of course, AB. They’ve also leveled up the AB game, adding an AB salad option to the menu.

Glenelg eatery Soulvaki Bros serves up AB so you can eat the chilli and BBQ dish right on the beach. Serving up a range of yiros and nuggets, Soulvaki Bros has something tasty for everyone.
Find Soulvaki Bros at 9a Moseley Square, Glenelg.
Described by the eatery as “saucy, crunchy, and perfect,” Mawson Lakes Chicken & Seafood serves up AB alongside salads, burgers, seafood, and fried treats.
