Australia is known worldwide for its incredible array of big things. From the iconic Big Rocking Horse in Gumeracha, South Australia, to the Big Boxing Crocodile at the top of the Northern Territory. There are well over a thousand big attractions around Australia, and it would probably take a good few years to try and see all of them.
Over 40 of these are in South Australia alone. The Australian Farmer (AKA The Big Farmer) – Wudinna

Located in Wudinna, The Australian Farmer is a granite sculpture standing at 8 metres in height and weighing around 70 tonnes. Sculpted by Marijan & David Bekic, the sculpture took 17 years (1992-2009) to construct, and celebrates the spirit of Australian farming communities from pioneering days to the challenges of rural living today.

The Big Ant – Poochera

Poochera, a small town about 640 kilometres west of Adelaide, has an interesting connection to a prehistoric species: Nothomyrmecia macrops, AKA dinosaur ants. The rare ant species dates back at least 70 million years, and they call Poochera home. To honour these dinosaur-age inhabitants, The Big Ant was constructed in 2008.

The Big Bee – Kingscote

The Big Bee is a standout feature of the The Kangaroo Island Ligurian Bee Company, a family owned and operated honey business in Kingscote, Kangaroo Island.

The Big Blade – Snowtown

Located on the northern end of the main street (called Railway Terrace East) in Snowtown, The Big Blade shows off the true size of a wind turbine blade. Beginning about 5km out of Snowtown, the Barunga-Hummocks Ranges are teeming with these wind turbines, many of which can be seen from The Big Blade.

The Big Bob-tail Lizard – Port Lincoln

The Big Bob-tail Lizard is located outside the Kuju Aboriginal Arts Centre in Port Lincoln.

The Big Bunch of Grapes – McLaren Vale

Positioned on the corner of Hewitt Drive and Main Road, the five-metre-tall ‘Heart of Industry’ sculpture celebrates McLaren Vale one of SA’s premier wine regions. Created by Danica Gacesa McLean and Trevor Wren, the big grapes were installed in 2023.

The Big Cherries – Pages Flat

The Big Cherries sit on top of an old school wagon in front of Fleurieu Cherries, an orchard just 45 minutes from the Adelaide CBD.

The Big Cockroach – Port Wakefield Road

Measuring 4m in length, The Big Cockroach lives just off of Port Wakefield Road in Lower Light. It was originally constructed in the 1990s.

The Big Dice – Barrier Highway

Consisting of six concrete blocks piled into a small pyramid, The Big Dice is a fantastic photo-op along the Barrier Highway. They are located 24km east of Yunta / 20km (12 mi) west of Mannahill, just off the Barrier Highway at Cockscomb Creek.

The Big Dunlop Tyre – Sturt Highway, Yamba

The Big Dunlop Tyre was originally built to coincide with the arrival of the Formula One Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide in 1985. It resides over the Sturt Highway in South Australia, welcoming drivers crossing the border from Victoria.

The Big Galah – Kimba

Built in 1993, the iconic Big Galah stands proudly in the rural town of Kimba on SA’s Eyre Peninsula and attracts thousands of tourists every year. Standing 8 metres high, the sculpture was a family-project initiated by Roger and Dianne Venning in the hopes of encouraging travellers to visit their gem shop, ‘Halfway Across Australia’.

The Big Green Frog – Peterborough

The Big Green Frog in Peterborough is a quirky, large fiberglass sculpture painted bright green, which nods to the nearby Frog Flat area. The landmark has become an iconic feature of the town, drawing visitors to stop, take photos, and explore Peterborough’s railway history.

The Big Hat – Cradock

The Big Hat is located across the road from the Cradock Hotel. It sits on top of a raised stand to keep it safe from wildlife.

The Big Hills Hoist – O’Sullivan Beach

The Big Hills Hoist at the corner of Morrow Road and O’Sullivan Beach Road, O’Sullivan Beach, south of Adelaide, is an enlarged version of one of South Australia’s most recognisable inventions.

The Big Kangaroo – Border Village

Made of fibreglass and papier mache, Rooey II was built in 1986 by Bill Metheral (known locally as Saltbrush Bill). Standing five metres high, the kangaroo statue was devised to attract visitors travelling on the Eyre Highway to Perth for the 1987 defence of the America’s Cup.

The Big Lobster – Kingston SE

Known locally as “Larry”, the Big Lobster was designed and built by Paul Kelly (who also designed the Big Scotsman) to attract attention to the visitor centre and restaurant nearby.

The Big Metal Tree – Coober Pedy

The steel tree on the hill overlooking Coober Pedy was created by Bob Amorosi to give his kids the experience of a tree in a town that, at the time of creation, had no trees.

Map the Miner – Kapunda

Completed in 1988 by sculptor Ben van Zetten, Map the Miner is a commemoration of the Cornish miners who arrived in Australia during the 1840s.

The Big Miner – Coober Pedy

The Big Miner is 6 metres tall and stands in front of an opal store in Coober Pedy.

The Big Olive – Tailem Bend

The Big Olive in Tailem Bend was finished in 2009 and stands 11 metres high. It stands in front of an olive oil bottling company.

The Big Orange – Berri

A landmark since the 1970s, The Big Orange designed by Adelaide architect John Twopenny.

The Big Oyster – Ceduna

Made with ferro-concrete, The Big Oyster was originally built by Leon Veerhuis as a float for Ceduna’s annual Oysterfest. It’s located next to an information booth on Eyre Highway just north of Ceduna.

The Big Pelican – Loxton

The Big Pelican was originally constructed as a float for a local Mardi Gras in 1979. The papier-mâché structure was remodelled, and overlaid with fibreglass in 1992. Today it can be found at the Loxton Caravan Park.

Another Big Pelican – Meningie

The other Big Pelican was carved from a single tree and includes depictions of a pelican as well as an Indigenous and a European child holding a fish together. It was created by Ants Redgum Gallery and unveiled in August 2015.

The Big Pigeon – Rundle Mall

Standing over 2 metres tall with a price tag of $174,000, The Big Pigeon was installed in rundle Mall back in 2020. It was created by South Australian artist Paul Sloan.

The Big Ram – Karoonda

Unveiled in 2003, The Big Ram in Karoonda is a celebration of the region’s sheep industry. Located on the Railway Lawns, The Big Ram is 2 metres high, 3 metres long, and made from concrete.

The Big Rocking Horse – Gumeracha

The Big Rocking Horse in Gumeracha is one of South Australia’s most iconic big things. The attraction also features The Big Park Bench and most recently The Big Bicycle, a temporary structure celebrating the Tour Down Under.

The Big Scotsman – Medindie, Adelaide

It’s an unmissable sight along the corner of Adelaide’s Main North Road and Nottage Terrace. The Big Scotsman,AKA ‘Scotty’, was built in December 1963 and is located at Scotty’s Motel. The Big Scotsman was designed by Paul Kelly, who also built The Big Lobster.

The Big Teddy Bear – Koolywurtie

The Teddy Bear is constructed from round and square hay bales, and is located 7 kilometres north of Minlaton at 20006 Spencer Hwy, Koolywurtie.

The Big Winch – Coober Pedy

The Big Winch is a celebration of Coober Pedy’s rich history of opal-mining. Built by Klaus Wirries in the 1970s, the original Big Winch was destroyed in 1986 and rebuilt shortly after. It’s located near The Big Metal Tree on a hill overlooking Coober Pedy.

The Big Wombat – Bookabie

The Big Wombat was constructed in 2013 by local community artists from the Scotdesco Aboriginal Community (Tjilkaba). The property is home to many Southern hairy nosed wombats.

The Big Yabby – Clayton

Built in 1973 by Henry Jones, The Big Yabby is located in the Murray River town of Clayton. It used to live outside the Yabby City Restaurant, but was moved in 2015 to a private residence in Clayton Bay, where it can be seen from the street.
