With the October long weekend just around the corner, it’s time to start pencilling in all the exciting events happening in South Australia. With COVID restrictions slowly but surely easing, SA is returning to its vibrant, lively self so there’s never been a better time to get out and explore our state.

Here are our top events for the October long weekend:

Popeye’s Dream Boat | Oct 1 – 4

Returning after a sell-out Adelaide Fringe season, Popeye’s Dream Boat is the boozy afternoon and evening of our dreams. Aboard the boat, local DJ’s playing groovy tunes and a bar stocked with all the usual suspects including beer, wine, KI gin and vodka – so expect an alcohol-fueled experience for this 18+ party. 

The epic boat party will take place across the entire long weekend, with availability from late afternoon to 11:30pm, so guests can book a cruisey mid-day or a boozy midnight. Hosted by Endless Grooves and Popeye and Paddle Boats on the River Torrens, this booze-fuelled event is part of Nature Festival 2021, which concludes at the end of the long weekend.

Family Garden Session at Pikes Beer Co | Oct 3

Visit the little brother of the iconic Pikes Winery – Pikes Beer Co – in the Clare Valley for their annual Family Garden Session! Chill out to tunes acoustic tunes by musical wonder Brad Bryksy and indulge a wood-fired feast whipped up by the team at Lovefield Catering.

Enjoy a glass of fine wine from the winery, or an ice cold beer from Pikes Beer Co as you sprawl out on the lush green lawns across the October long weekend. There’s plenty of kid’s activities too, making it the perfect event for South Australian’s of all ages.

Time Camp Out for Kids | Oct 2-3

Time for Kids, a program run by Relationships Australia SA, has launched a fundraising event encouraging South Australians of any age to camp out for a cause this long weekend.

Participants in Time for Kids Camp Out can choose to camp in teams or solo in a location of their choosing any where in South Australia. At a time when many are looking for COVID-safe family-friendly recreational activities, Time for Kids Camp Out is the perfect opportunity to enjoy some outdoor or indoor fun whilst raising funds for a very worthy cause these school holidays.

SA Viking Festival | Oct 2-3

Travel back in time to the 11th Century at South Australia’s annual Viking Festival this October long weekend. Medieval enthusiasts can expect to greeted with a range of stalls, re-enactment groups and combat shows, a Viking-like feast and pints of cold beer from Shift Lizard Brewing Co.

This event is perfect for families, featuring a petting zoo hosted by Animal Capers and an array of historical interactive stalls. Adult tickets are from $18, concession/students from $14, and under 10s can get in for free.

Wine Playground | Oct 3

Adelaide, it’s playtime – but not in the usual setting of the swing-sets and slides. Get ready for The Fruitful Pursuit’s annual Wine Playground on Sunday October 3. While this event is a hop, skip and jump from the usual playground antics, the Fruitful Pursuit event allows guests to swing between boutique and small-batch craft wineries and taste imported drops from Fletcher Wines and I Love Monsters.

The event will be hosted at Good Gilbert in Goodwood, showcasing over 50 wines, 18 winemakers and 2 importers across two sessions on the Sunday. Tickets cost $65.

Tiki-Palooza | Oct 1 – 4

From a thriving local family of musicians, low-brow artists, bartenders, hot rodders, pinups and those who dig a retro aesthetic, Tiki-Palooza has this year grown to encompass two Adelaide venues. The event is held over 4 days, coinciding with the October long weekend (1-4), with both Weekender and Day Passes available. The program is full of workshops, car shows, and live music.

Tickets prices vary, with some shows free entry, and others up to $85 per person.

FOMO Fridays | Oct 1

Circa 2019

As a part of the SA Government’s plan to reignite the CBD, FOMO Fridays has brought Adelaide back to its vibrant and lively self, despite the winter chills and COVID.

On Friday, October 1 it’s the CBD West’s turn to light up, with Light Square and Waymouth Street hosting a night filled with fun, games and of course a boozy street party on one of Adelaide’s iconic bar streets. If street parties aren’t quite your style, a wellness workout will be hosted on the lawns of Light Square in the morning, with giant jenga in the afternoon. FOMO Friday events are free to attend.

1871 Village Market | Oct 2

There is an exciting new country market coming to Ennis Park in Clare Valley for the October long weekend. Attendees can expect fun festival vibes with plenty of local art, live music, produce, fruit and veg, breakfast, lunch, coffee by Café 1871. Bar 1871 will be making cocktails and offering some of South Australia’s finest Spirits for tasting and purchase.

We Love Old Skool | Oct 3

If you are a lover of old school music, this long weekend event sounds right up your alley! Atlantis Bar & Lounge are hosting a night of ‘Old Skool’ beats with DJs, JoSH, Justice, Kontrol, Professor X, AJ, Dillup and LC.

Live Music at Z WINE | Oct 1-2

Enjoy two evenings filled with live music at Z WINE Cellar Door & Wine Bar. Musicians Jorja Rose and Two For One will be playing acoustic sounds on the Friday and Saturday of the long weekend. Guests can enjoy an amazing selection of the boutique winery’s award-winning wines, and a selection of regional food while enjoying a relaxing night of great music.

Tasting Experience | Oct 2-4

Located inside Elderton’s stunning Cellar Door, enjoy a tasting flight of four wines of your choice from their Estate and Exceptional Site ranges. Current release wines to choose from include Eden Valley Riesling, Eden Valley Chardonnay, Western Ridge Grenache Carignan , Merlot, Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon, Barossa Shiraz , Neil Ashmead Grand Tourer Shiraz, Ode to Lorraine and Golden Semillon.

Labour Day Sounds | Oct 3

Richard Hamilton Wines are hosting an afternoon of music and great food. The Russel Stewart Duo will be providing the tunes, and delicious pizzas, smashed potatoes, and hot chips. Liquid Delights will be serving all the sweet treats for everyone to enjoy at the cellar door.

JR Art Exhibition | Oct 1-4

Local artist Josh Ruddock will be showcasing his art this October long weekend at Sunny Hill Distillery. Live music will be playing on both the Saturday and Sunday, along with food catered by businesses local to the Yorke Peninsula. The team at Sunny Hill will be serving some delicious cocktails for guests to enjoy while checking out awesome art.

Disco Long Weekend at Stacked | Oct 3

Chilli Shack Spring Edition | Oct 3

McLaren Vale winery Lloyd Brothers is back with their popular chilli shack, slinging all things saucy, spicy and delicious this long weekend! We recommend arriving hungry as there’s a delicious menu on offer. There will be chilli for all to enjoy with chilli crab, chilli pork, chilli eggplant and more on the menu. Indulge in your spicy, savoury chilli while you enjoy the finest of wine from the Mclaren Vale vineyard.

The entry tickets at $49 include a dish of chilli or paella, Lloyd Brothers branded Riedel glass to keep and a glass of new release Lloyd Brothers wine. Teens will also have a discounted entry of $25 which includes a Chilli Shack meal and Mountain Fresh juice.

Alforno Lunch at Mitolo Wines | Oct 4

While Mitolo has long situated itself as a go-to spot for fine wine and food when taking a weekend trip to McLaren Vale, the winery will specially open its doors to the public on the Monday of the long weekend.

Guests can expect a hearty tasting menu, created with sharing in mind and curated from fresh local ingredients. Monday’s menu will feature a line-up of dishes created with traditional techniques using only the newly built wood oven, including house-made cheese, salami and of course – pasta!

The afternoon is $65 per person, with a delicious children’s Bimbi menu priced at $40 as well. The tasting room will also be open across the long weekend for those who can’t attend the exciting lunch.
