Launched at the start of the year, this landmark new concert series gives many more musicians and small ensembles the chance to perform in the heritage-listed Elder Hall. With the strategic placement of specially-commissioned wooden screens, this glorious venue has the flexibility to be transformed into an intimate recital space, while still maintaining the superb acoustic qualities for which it is renowned.

“We’re really looking forward to playing for the first time in the more intimate setting of Elder Hall in its recital mode – it’s the perfect space for the repertoire of music we’ve selected to perform,” says Hilary Kleinig, Zephyr Quartet founder and cellist.

“As an ensemble we’ve always enjoyed playing music from all around the world and over the years we’ve gathered and arranged some of our favourite folk tunes from a wide range of cultures. Resonance will be the first concert that we’ve dedicated wholly to the presentation of folk music.”

Included in the program will be a mix of both traditional and contemporary folk songs from Mexico, the Middle East, Europe, Eastern Europe and Australia. Each piece has been arranged by either individual Zephyr Quartet members or fellow South Australians. The quartet commissioned local composers Stephen Whittington and Quincy Grant to create arrangements for two pieces in the Resonance program: Homage to Frida Kahlo: La Sandunga – a traditional Mexican folk song arranged by Stephen, and Csitári Hegyek Alatt – a new Hungarian folk song arranged by Quincy.

Other works to feature within the program include: Noumi Noumi Yaldatii – a traditional Hebrew lullaby arranged by Emily Tulloch; Klockar Aleksanteri – a traditional Finnish folk song arranged by Belinda Gehlert; and Dinaresade – a traditional Syrian folk song arranged by Hilary Kleinig.

Zephyr Quartet has elected to donate all profits from the Resonance concert to the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR – to assist relief efforts for Syrian refugees.

“Our Resonance concert is all about acknowledging our global humanity through the celebration of musical cultures, so it seems fitting to donate the profits from this concert to help our ‘neighbours’ in need,” says Hilary Kleinig.
