Contestant Zak Antoniou, renowned for his desserts on Zumbo’s Just Desserts has been nominated for Best Haute Couture Wedding Cake Designer of the year award.

Cake creator extrondinaire and owner of Zacary Desserts, Zak Antoniou was surprised by the nomination as the category is traditionally dominated by buttercream and fondant cake makers.

“Usually the people in this category are traditional buttercream/fondant cake makers who produce some beautifully amazing work.

“I am not 100% sure who nominated me for this award but the process for nominations/awards are that industry professionals, peers, customers, etc have an opportunity to nominate for their favourite cake designers.

“I’ve always been a creative person and so many businesses do amazing traditional cakes.

“I’ve seen mirror glazed cakes being a trend across Europe and I fell in love with it. I was mesmerised and I honed that craft until I was happy with the results I was getting.

“All my cakes are custom made and I’d classify myself as a cake artist.

The industry awards are coordinated by the Australian Cake Artist & Decorators Association and the award will be announced on Saturday 14th May.

With such a bright future for the young and budding creative, Antoniou has expressed interest in opening a bricks and mortar location in Adelaide.

“I would love a patisserie store in Adelaide in the future that would showcase amazing custom designed cakes along with cakes customers can order.”

Up against 29 other cake designers who have been nominated, the public have the power as the award winner is selected by the public.

Public voting closes on the 20th March.

From there, 8 designers will be selected as finalist who will have to design a wedding cake inspired by an award winning couture gown designer selected by the judges.

Two designers from SA have been nominated for this award including Antoniou and Terresia Welch from Lyons Den Cakes, who actually won the 2021 title last year.

The awards will be announced on the night of the 15th May at the Cake Oscar Awards.
