An Adelaide Cabaret institution, Cabaret Live! is an open mic night for amateur and experienced performers.
Whilst the show is usually hosted by local cabaret icon Sidonie Henbest, visiting artist Trevor Jones graciously stepped in to fill the role at short notice due to illness, with Chris Martin as the resident pianist for the night.
Whilst Cabaret Live!, which runs throughout the year on the first Sunday of each month, usually has more local amateur talent getting up, the Fringe series brings in more experienced artists who are performing in shows around town. The previous week’s Fringe version of Cabaret Live! had a more balanced mix of Fringe performers and local artists, not promoting shows, and better showcased what this is about, giving amateurs a place to have a go and get some experience, and for more experienced artists it is a place to try out new material.
The balance for the Fringe version of the show is dependent, however, on who registers to perform, as organisers need to know that they will have enough performers turn up to fill the one hour show. For the shows outside of Fringe, performance is based on a turn up on the night with music and put your name on the list basis.
Special mention for these shows does go to the resident pianists that are on hand to sight read, automatically transpose, and play from memory on the rare occasion that singers have not got their music with them. Whilst it is standard procedure that singers provide sheet music, or chord charts, Martin did an excellent job of working with two performers tonight who did not have music with them.
As this is an open mic night, each show is different, so come along to the remaining Fringe version of Cabaret Live! and also come and see the regular first Sunday of the month shows.
