Book Review: Betrothed Book 2: Allegiance, by Wanda Wiltshire

In the second book of the young adult fantasy series, Betrothed, Leif, Marla and Jack must join forces to help vanquish a deadly threat.

I was so impressed with this second book in this series. Often, they lose track or lack the enthusiasm of the first, but Allegiance is as captivating as Betrothed. Wanda Wiltshire has continued her story, wrapping the complexities of two worlds, that of humankind and Fae, as elements of each are used to fight the Shadow Fae, a race that threatens the existence of the folk of Faera.

She alludes to deals done and uses the magic of a Prince to develop an understanding of the depths of young love and the bonds of true friendship. Marla must learn to trust her betrothed and is sworn into mutual allegiance with King Telophy as her freedom and future is entwined in the search for a king, whose very presence is threatening both.

Faery magic and Facebook, combined with the lies and deceit of a human and the openness of family, sees the long sought-after twin brother introduced to Sydney and Marla’s duality. The author, Wiltshire, cleverly illustrates the propensity of Australian culture to embrace and support those with differing backgrounds. It shows the willingness of Amy/ Marla’s family to include both human and Fae in their everyday lives.

When a changeling is found, the two girls involved in the switch need to be relocated. Friendship and skill sees Hillary and Jack staying in Faera in the service of the King, while they also deal with their own personal dilemmas involving changing relationships and helping to implement a plan to save Telophy from the constant attacks on its citizens.

Once again as this part of the story concludes and the reader breathes an exhausted sigh of relief. The impending drama teases and tantalises as to what will come next in the third book of the series, Confused.
