Film Review: Monsters University

Monsters-UniversityFor all Monster fans Mike and Sully are back with a 3D prequel to their 2001 hit Monsters Inc. This time we get to see how our ‘heroes’ sought to train as scarers and the crazy events which led to them working at Monsters Inc .Our favourite monsters still use the vocal talents of Billy Crystal and John Goodman, but there are many new characters to get to know.

Director Dan Scanlon has kept the comedy high and the film is bright colourful and full of action containing many chuckles a few good belly laughs. Mike and Sully are exposed to the fraternity house system and have to contend with some interesting problems (and Monsters) to make the grade as scarers. Sometimes the most unlikely companions can make a team!

My companions for this movie were my pre-teen and teenaged grandchildren and their mother and it was a unanimous hit. There was plenty to amuse and appeal to all ages in the well-written script by Robert L. Baird, Dan Geeson and Dan Scanlon. Produced by Kori Rae the story stays true to what we already know of these characters, but gives some insight into how they developed giving them a back-story. Again no real violence, Monsters scare children to get the scream, never hurt them, so completely PG.

There were some interesting 3D effects but the story and laughs are strong enough that it doesn’t need to rely on this and would be good to view without 3D. Given the popularity of the previous movies, I would predict a sure fire hit for the school holiday viewing!
