Movember Madness: Adelaide’s public transport to sport stylish ‘staches for men’s health

The city’s buses, trains, trams, and even marine safety boats will be donning the iconic moustache in support of Movember.

Adelaide’s public transport system is getting a hairy makeover this November, and it’s all for a good cause. As November rolls around, the city’s buses, trains, trams, and even marine safety boats will be donning the iconic moustache in support of Movember, a global movement dedicated to raising awareness for men’s health issues.

In a unique collaboration, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport has joined forces with Adelaide Metro and Marine Safety to champion this cause. Their message? Encouraging South Australians to spot the ‘mo’ on their daily commute and spark conversations about men’s health.

This year, the city and its surrounding regions, including the Adelaide Hills, will see 60 buses, 22 trains, 10 trams, and four boats proudly sporting the black handlebar moustache. It’s not just about the aesthetic; it’s a call to action.

Residents are encouraged to snap a photo when they spot these moustachioed modes of transport and share it on social media using the hashtags #AdelaideMetMo or #MarineMo. Lucky participants stand a chance to win a regular metroCARD loaded with a $50 credit. But, a word to the wise: safety first! Ensure you’re on the footpath or platform behind the white line when capturing that perfect shot.

While these eye-catching moustaches are hard to miss, the underlying message is that mental health struggles often aren’t as visible. Movember is more than just a month of facial hair fun; it’s a movement that aims to amplify the importance of early cancer detection, treatment, and the reduction of preventable deaths.

For those who might be follicly challenged or simply want to participate in other ways, Movember offers a plethora of options.

From walking or running 60 kilometres throughout the month to hosting a themed morning tea or even crafting a personalised challenge, there’s a way for everyone to contribute.

Since its inception in 2003, Movember has grown from a grassroots initiative to a global phenomenon, funding over 1,250 men’s health projects worldwide. Sporting a ‘mo’ isn’t just a fashion statement; it’s an invitation for dialogue, prompting people to check in on their ‘mo bros’ and see how they’re doing.

The Department’s partnership with Movember isn’t new. It began in 2018 with a single moustache on a tram. Today, it’s a city-wide movement, with moustaches gracing various modes of public transport, inspiring Adelaide’s residents to join the cause.

For those inspired to grow their own ‘mo,’ Movember offers a handy guide to help cultivate and style the perfect moustache.

In a world where conversations about men’s health are often sidelined, Movember and initiatives like these serve as a reminder of the importance of awareness, dialogue, and action. So, this November, whether you’re growing, showing, or simply supporting the ‘mo,’ remember it’s all in the name of a vital cause.
