A regional Code Red extreme weather response has been called by the State Government from Sunday evening, concluding on Thursday morning (January 14) to assist people experiencing homelessness in heatwave conditions.
Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink said the response had been activated in some parts of regional SA to assist people, following advice from the State Emergency Service about severe heatwave conditions in these areas.
The areas affected include Clare, Port Augusta, the Riverland and Murray Bridge.
“During a Code Red activation, Housing SA, together with its non-government partners, makes additional accommodation and services available for extended hours for people sleeping rough in the hot weather,” Ms Lensink said.
“In these kinds of conditions, it is important that people are able to keep cool and remain hydrated.
“People in regional areas can call Homelessness Connect SA on 1800 003 308 if they are experiencing homelessness and need assistance in the heat. This service is available state-wide 24/7, every day of the year.”
Ms Lensink urged the community to check on the elderly, people who live alone, with disability or mental illness and those who are housebound, frail and the aged.
“I also urge vulnerable members of the community who may be struggling with the heat to register with the free TeleCross REDi phone service.
“Those registered can receive a phone call up to three times a day to check on how they are coping and the trained Red Cross volunteers can also provide tips to stay cool or activate an emergency procedure if required.”
