Unleash the Monsters… Get an Original Piece of Fringe this Friday

The colourful monsters characterising Adelaide Fringe 2012 have been let loose throughout Adelaide and across the country – on posters, thongs, stubby holders, t-shirts, two buses, four minis and even a tram.

And now the whole monster family will be on offer this Friday 17 February when artist Sue Ninham reveals the monster story in her exhibition featuring 140 water-colour creations at Paper String Plastic art gallery at 99a Hindley Street at 6pm.

‘Monsters and Other Related Quirkiness’, will be opened by Fringe Director and Chief Executive Greg Clarke who personally selected nine of Ninham’s iconic monsters to play a monumental role in the upcoming 2012 Fringe season.

Sue is thrilled to finally unveil the full monster story, which she began creating after her father passed away two years ago and she needed to rejuvenate herself, taking a break from her usual large-scale abstract watercolour and oil paintings.

“The monsters are a quirky bunch of characters, who came to life not only as artwork, but also with a name and a biography. I have enjoyed creating such a family – they have put a smile on my face every day,” said Ninham from her Adelaide studio.

Beryl Parties: Legs akimbo and gifted with a colour that can’t be ignored, this gal knows how to have a good time. Her mother wishes she wouldn’t go out with her hair like that and hopes it’s a phase she’s going through. But Beryl knows there’s no time to waste on such thoughts…you’re only pink once!

Gordon Transmitting: With a mouth like that Gordon has earned himself a reputation as a good communicator. He is the Monsters’ mouthpiece, keeping the gang connected as they move across the globe. Sometimes his antenna comes in handy when his throat is hoarse, as it tends to get from time to time.

Stormy Weather Ticker: Ticker has a big heart. Her capacity for loving is legendary amongst the gang and she forgives and forgets. Sometimes the Monsters have spats, sometimes they don’t see eye to eye. She is always ready to step in and sort it. Her kindness is often rewarded somehow, but that doesn’t interest her. She loves because she can.
