5 creative ways to modernise your favourite Christmas desserts

We spoke to the experts at Kytons Bakery on how you can put a modern twist on traditional desserts like pudding, cake and mince pies.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and one that is filled with tradition. But sometimes it’s good to shake things up. This year, why not spice up your Christmas dessert by taking some of the much-loved dishes and giving them a modern twist?

We spoke to the experts of Christmas baking over at Kytons on how you can refashion traditional favourites into fun, interesting desserts that will have the whole table talking.

DESSERT GRAZING PLATTER

Nothing says modern in the culinary world more than a grazing plate. With bite-sized morsels of delicious food, it’s the perfect way to serve larger groups and means everyone can fill their plate as little or as much as they like, depending on how full they are after lunch!

Fill your grazing board with mini-Christmas puddings, mince pies, cookies, rocky road and fresh fruit and you’ve got yourself not only a great, self-serve dessert but also a beautiful table centrepiece! Top it off with jugs of brandy and custard for the finishing touch.

MINCE PIE ICE-CREAM SANDWICHES

Modernise this Christmas staple by turning them into an ice cream sandwich! Simply cut the top off, add a scoop of your favourite ice cream (we love Golden North new Indulgence vanilla to compliment the rich flavours of the pie) and then pop the top back on. Voila! Quality is key here to ensure the simple ingredients stand out and Kytons mince pies have won at the Great Aussie Pie Competition not just once, but twice, and are baked fresh daily to give you the yummiest taste of Christmas you can get.

MINI CHRISTMAS CAKE POPS

The best way to make something more appealing to the little ones is to make it mini. To make these mini cake pops, simply put the traditional Christmas Pudding or cake in the food processor and roll into little balls before refrigerating for 30 minutes. Once firm, insert skewers and then cover in melted chocolate. Easy! For a little something extra, you can decorate with sprinkles, mint leaves, or any other festive adornments. This is also a fun activity to get the kids involved with.

CHRISTMAS CAKE TRIFLE

Both Christmas cake and Christmas pudding make the perfect base for a trifle, giving both of these classic dishes a bit of a shake-up. Layer the cake with jelly and cream, and top with fresh fruit and grated chocolate for a dessert that will impress your guests without much effort at all.

SANTA CHOC CHIP HOUSE

This one is a bit of a cheat’s dessert because Kytons have done all the hard work for you. Their Santa Choc Chip House is a twist on the traditional gingerbread house that uses choc-chip cookie dough as the base. And the best part? The pre-baked house comes in a DIY kit with icing and chocolate buttons so you and the kids can have some fun building and decorating together.

If you’re someone who likes the classics just as they are, a Kytons Christmas pudding is perfect on its own paired with a drizzle of custard and a simple cup of tea and with all of their products made locally at the bakehouse in Edwardstown and using all-Aussie ingredients, you can enjoy knowing you’re supporting local South Australian businesses at the same time.
