A Trip Down Memory Lane With Norwood’s Oldest Residents

the paradeSome of Norwood’s oldest residents will transform The Parade into a trip down memory lane as part of a major community arts program during September.

Images of school life during World War II, tram rides in the 1940s and dancing the night away at the Norwood Town Hall in the 1950s are just some of the scenes that will adorn 30 street banners along Norwood Parade.

Food, sport and Norwood’s cafe culture also feature prominently in “Banners on My Parade”, an arts program developed by leading aged care provider ACH Group in partnership with the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters.

The Parade Precinct Committee has provided financial support for the program. ACH Group brought together 16 older first-time artists, including four over the age of 90 and all with a connection to Norwood, who worked with community artist Helen Crawford over 10 weeks to create their banner designs.

The artists also shared personal stories about life in Norwood and reconnected with old friends.

“Banners on My Parade was developed to engage older people with their community while contributing to the arts in Norwood,” ACH Group’s Dementia Services Strategy Manager, Ms Lenore de la Perrelle, said.

“Each of the artists has long-established connections with Norwood, making it a great way for them to pass on their stories to younger generations and build on the heritage character of the area.

“They also had the opportunity to reminisce and share stories about their experiences growing up in Norwood. Friendships flourished and some artists reconnected with old school mates after almost 80 years.”

Share the nostalgic mood and enjoy the artworks along The Parade this month.
