Sanctuary returns to Adelaide riverbank with global DJs and immersive industrial art

Adelaide’s favourite pop-up summer dance destination, Sanctuary, is back with a bang, promising a series of jam-packed Saturday nights and one epic Friday night party.

Annual open-air club series and crowd favourite, Sanctuary, returned to Adelaide’s riverbank in January, bringing back summer’s electronic dance floor for a new season of music, art, and dancing. Running across an enormous 11 Saturdays – it’s longest run yet – the opening party was headlined by Berlin-based Melbourne native Merve, alongside Fishermen’s Friend, Alley O, Wallace & Malone and Musch, and the program has been a sensory masterpiece every Saturday since.

But, we’re not here to tell you what you’ve missed, because this wild party is continuing through the rest of February’s hot summer nights and carrying you into the crisp autumn air of March, until its grand finale on Saturday 28 March.

What’s next in this epic program? Hot on the cards is an appearance by the legendary Danilo Plessow (aka Motor City Drum Ensemble), in his first South Australian appearance in more than a decade. Known for choosing taste over trends, this music producer and DJ is one of dance music’s grand masters, and will make his appearance during the second half of Sanctuary’s summer season, at an exclusive one-off Friday night party.

This week on Saturday night, you can look forward to the enigmatic Jennifer Loveless from Berlin – joined by Club Sandwich, Elsie Craig, Mikayla and Pierre Honey – and each week’s headliner will be announced on social media the Tuesday before the show.

The creative mastermind behind the event is SA design and production outfit Company Works, who, in collaboration with FutureJuice, are thrilled to be on board for the third season of Sanctuary, where they’ve spent months creating a holistic program to showcase the very best emerging and established artists from Aussie soil and all across the globe.

Company Works co-founder, David Musch – who runs the company with partners Oscar Harding, Elliott Jamie and Henry Jarman – says the season’s current turnout for Sanctuary has been huge, with 800-1200 attendees every Saturday night since opening, and they’re pumped for what is looking to be their biggest season yet.

“Design, art and world-building plays a large role in the Sanctuary experience, from our brutalist architectural stage to car-dance podiums,” says David. “It’s built by our community, for the community. The idea is to create a temporary world that invites everyone to step outside the everyday and dance through the chaos.”

“Every weekend is a highlight for us, and we’ve got something special planned for the closing party,” he says.

For a truly mind-blowing display of electronic music, art, and dancing, you won’t want to miss the second half of Sanctuary. The best is yet to come!
