Whether you’re into horse racing or not, the Melbourne Cup is an annual event on Australia’s social calendar that brings people together, usually over a long lunch either at fancy restaurants, local pubs, or in the office kitchen for some sneaky sweepstakes and arvo drinks.

But if you can’t commit to a formal Melbourne Cup event but want to get together with friends for lunch or to enjoy a few drinks as you duck out to watch the race, then Kent Town bar KHOU has you covered this race day.

On Tuesday, November 7th, KHOU is opening its doors for the first time for the Melbourne Cup, hosting a non-ticketed event and rolling out the welcome mat for anyone who wants to watch the race or simply enjoy a leisurely lunch or drink among the festivities.

Co-owners and husband and wife duo Bec and Dan are looking forward to inviting their local customers and visitors in to be a part of the day, making it accessible and flexible for everyone.

‘We wanted to offer something for Melbourne Cup that wasn’t necessarily so formal if people didn’t want that’, says Bec. ‘If people want to pop down in their lunch break or if they live locally and want to get out of the house for a bit with the kids, people can stay for as little or as long as they like and enjoy a couple of drinks or stay for a feed as they watch the race.’

On the day, KHOU will, of course, have its full menu available, but there will also be special cocktails and canapes on offer for the Cup. ‘We have pizzas, share platters and grazing boards with tapas style food, perfect to nibble on end enjoy over a few drinks’, says Bec.

‘We’ll have a huge flat-screen TV inside for people to watch the race and all the festivities of the Cup, and both indoor and outdoor seating—so people can be a part of the action or kick back with friends.’

‘This year, we really gauged what our local community wanted—people are looking for flexibility and the option to decide on the fly what they want to do that day without committing to a formal event and spending a lot of money on a ticket’, says Bec. ‘So, we’re giving people that option to book a table with friends or work colleagues and enjoy an extended lunch, and we’re also saving some space for walk-ins.’

This non-ticketed Melbourne Cup event at KHOU promises to deliver the chilled and relaxed vibes the bar is known for. Featuring the team’s own labelled wine, Signature Wines, the drinks list is a celebration of local spirits and vinos, including the likes of Mosquito Hill, Auld Family Wines and Hey Diddle.

‘We cater to anyone who’s looking to sample and experience the best SA wines and produce this state has to offer, and we’re proud that both our food and drink offerings at KHOU have a big emphasis on local’, says Bec.

So, this November 7th, join the team at KHOU for their first-ever Melbourne Cup celebration. Why not take the pressure off yourself in finding the perfect outfit or fascinator for some formal Cup luncheon and instead opt for a more laid-back atmosphere with great drinks and delicious food?
