Malcolm Creek Wines opens intimate new cellar door in the Adelaide Hills

Malcolm Creek Wines has opened a tiny, by-appointment-only cellar door in the Adelaide Hills, offering aged wines, vertical tastings and a deeply personal experience in a stunning garden setting.

Loacted between Chain of Ponds and Williamstown in the northern Adelaide Hills, a small cellar door is offering wine lovers something new. Malcolm Creek Wines has unveiled its brand new, by-appointment-only tasting space.

“It is a “tiny” cellar door with a big story to tell,” says Shayne Jaenisch

Owned by Shayne and Jeanette Jaenisch, Malcolm Creek is no newcomer to the Hills. The vineyard was established more than 35 years ago by third-generation winemaker Reg Tolley and still sits on the original Ashwood Estate.

It is here that slow-ripening fruit grows at altitude, handpicked at peak ripeness and matured in French oak before it reaches the glass. The vineyard produces premium single-varietal Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, with vines aged between 25 and 35 years.

But it was a single bottle that first connected Shayne to the vineyard’s legacy.

“In 2012, we were at a dinner party and tried a 2008 Malcolm Creek Cab Sav in a blind tasting,” Shayne says.

“The aroma, the flavour, it stopped us in our tracks. The next day, we were at the cellar door and that visit kicked off a 15-year love affair with the wines and a beautiful friendship with then-owners Karsten and Bitten.”

That connection turned into stewardship. Now, Shayne and Jeanette are offering others the same experience that captivated them all those years ago. Only this time, they are behind the counter.

Visits are strictly by booking, ensuring guests receive a guided journey through the history of the estate, the gardens and the wines.

One of the highlights is a vertical tasting experience, where guests can try different vintages of the same wine. Current tastings stretch back to 2016, but for those eager to explore deeper, museum vintages from 2005, 2006 and 2007 are also available. Many of the wines on pour are over seven years old.

“We don’t believe wine is made to sit on a shelf. It’s made to be shared and enjoyed,” Shayne says.

“Ninety percent of what we sell is well-aged. That’s when it starts to show real character.”

The future of Malcolm Creek includes more than wine. Shayne’s background in business coaching is soon to blend with the vineyard in a new corporate experience offering. While details remain under wraps, the focus will be on connection, purpose and the powerful setting of the estate.

As for the cellar door, it may be small, but if you are lucky enough to score a booking, you will walk away with more than a bottle or two. You will leave with a deeper appreciation of time, craft and the people who carry on a legacy with heart.
