This July, South Australian based company Mopoke Theatre Productions will present a double-billed night at the opera. From spicy gossip to mistaken identities, Carlo Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief and The Telephone are sure to have you in hysterics!
Mopoke Theatre Productions is an South Australian independent theatre company that was founded in 2014 by Artistic Director Nicholas Cannon to support local new and emerging artists through the production of high-quality, small-scale performances that are accessible to the community.
The Telephone follows two young lovers trying to spend a few precious moments together before Ben has to catch his train. He’s ready to ask a life-changing question — but will Lucy’s constantly ringing phone get in the way?
The Telephone will feature Jessica Mills as Lucy and Nicholas Cannon as Ben and will be directed by Macintyre Howie-Reeves and musically directed by Sachiko Hidaka.
The Old Maid and The Thief tells the story of how far an older woman and her young maid might go for their affection toward a handsome stranger, and what might lead an honest man to steal. This “Desperate Housewives of the 1930s” is a delightfully funny yet poignant one act opera. Menotti’s wonderful melodies and cheeky humour skilfully explore themes of love, morality, companionship, freedom and social status.
The Old Maid and The Thief will feature Catriona Barr as Miss Todd, Macintyre Howie-Reeves as Bob, Jessica Mills as Laeticia and Rachel McCall as Miss Pinkerton and will be directed by Nicholas Cannon with music direction by Penelope Cashman.
