A trip to the supermarket is about to look very different for Goolwa locals, with plans unveiled for a brand-new Foodland that’s set to be almost three times the size of the current store.
The family-owned supermarket has announced it will build a new, larger store on its existing site, marking one of the biggest retail investments for the town in recent years.
The new supermarket will be constructed in the existing car park while the current Foodland continues trading as normal, meaning customers won’t have to shop elsewhere while construction is underway.
However, while the supermarket is getting bigger, it’s keeping its irreplaceable small-town, community-focused approach front and centre. For anyone worried the expansion means losing the local service the store has become known for, Foodland says that’s one thing that won’t be changing.
“The new store may be much bigger and more modern, but one thing won’t change – the service you’ve become used to,” they announced.
The supermarket has also confirmed it will continue to offer a fully staffed customer service counter and dedicated express checkouts with team members on hand to help shoppers – a real win for local jobs, and the Goolwa community.
The focus of the expansion is on giving locals more room to shop and a greater range of products to choose from, promising “more space, more range, more choice”.
While some locals voiced concerns about parking, especially during peak holiday periods, the team has given the issue careful consideration.
While the new supermarket will initially occupy the existing car park, Foodland says the current store building will eventually be partially demolished to create additional parking spaces, with further parks planned along the site’s eastern boundary. Staff will also park off-site to maximise customer parking, and new disabled parks will be positioned at the store entrance. Overall, the supermarket says there will be no net loss of customer parking once the project is complete.
The redevelopment comes as Goolwa continues to experience steady growth, with the Fleurieu Peninsula attracting new residents and visitors alike.
“This is a major investment in Goolwa, our team and our local community”, the Foodland team shared.
While an opening date for the new supermarket is yet to be announced, locals can continue shopping as usual while work gets underway on what will soon become a much larger Foodland for Goolwa.
