Adapted from Hitchcock’s 1935 masterpiece, which itself was adapted from John Buchanan’s 1915 novel, The 39 Steps as presented by the University of Adelaide Theatre Guild is a clever and captivating tale of espionage, intrigue, and humour.
This particular presentation is very well done, with an excellent cast who deliver the work in a way that is impossible to not be entertained by. After a slow start, the pace picks up and the comedy kicks in, with plenty of genuine laugh out loud moments.
Mark Wickett’s direction is excellent. Remaining faithful to the original text, Wickett manages to draw humour and laughs from lines and scenarios that were most likely considered quite serious in the original novel.
The use of a Foley Artist live on stage for the majority of the sound effects was a nice touch. It gave a certain feel to the play that allowed the audience to feel like they had indeed gone back in time to witness this, rather than viewing a 2024 rendition of an old piece.
Thomas Medina in the lead role is superb. It’s difficult to fault his performance, which was hilarious when appropriate, yet subtle and intense when needed. Supported by a small but talented cast who provided contrast, depth, and hilarity, this show has been cast very well.
The minimalist set worked well, combined with good lighting and audio, topped with excellent costuming. All round, a well considered and executed production of a great piece.
