Fresh from seven months performing in London’s Covent Garden and West End comedy clubs, Adelaide comedian and magician Tony Roberts rolls the dice with his brand new show – The Gambler in the Garden of Unearthly Delights.
The Gambler features Tony Roberts' signature intimate card illusions and comedy.
“The trouble with being a magician is you say, ‘I’m a magician’ and people actually hear the word ‘tosser’,” says Tony, adding that for him “real magic is laughter”.
Gambling with his life(style), Roberts made a dramatic life change at 40, turning his back on a high paying corporate gig to back himself as a comedian and magician.
“I gave everything away, and literally condensed my life down to one suitcase, no permanent abode and a dream,” says Tony.
Having spent the past six years travelling the world as a street performer, Tony knows that gambles in life can pay off big… or fall flat. “Every time I walk on to a street pitch, put down my suitcase and start a show, I’m gambling on creating an audience from passers-by with a spontaneous show that enthrals and entertains. I have to get it right each time or people won’t stop to watch – it’s as simple as that.”
Tony’s gamble has certainly paid off with performances at the Edinburgh Fringe three years running and at festivals in New Zealand, the UK and Australia.
Following a successful 2011 Adelaide Fringe season with sold out shows, Roberts recent extended stint in the UK saw him sharing the stage with some of the UK’s top comedians as compere at Soho’s Top Secret Comedy Club as well as showcasing his card magic skills as feature act at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum.
