Wet and cold weather triggers statewide Code Blue across SA

A statewide Code Blue has been activated for people sleeping rough as South Australia faces a wet and cold snap.

South Australia’s wet and chilly winter weather has prompted the activation of a statewide Code Blue, providing additional support for people sleeping rough during the harsh conditions.

The overnight Code Blue response is in place on Monday, August 24th, meaning homelessness services and their partners may be stepping up support across the state.

The activation is designed to help people without safe or secure accommodation access additional assistance as cold and wet weather creates increased risks for those sleeping outdoors.

Human Services Minister Katrine Hildyard said, “We know wet and cold weather can create more serious risk for people sleeping rough. This Code Blue helps people know that they are not alone.

“This statewide activation is about giving people somewhere warm and safe to stay, along with the practical support they need during the most severe conditions.

“We want to make sure that South Australians who most need our support can access more help during harsh winter weather.”

The statewide activation highlights the additional risks winter weather can create for people experiencing homelessness, while giving services extra resources to provide practical assistance, outreach and access to safe spaces.

Support available during the Code Blue response may include extended daytime operating hours and additional staffing at homelessness services, as well as increased street outreach to connect with people sleeping rough.

Statewide supports provided by homelessness services and their partners may include:

  • Increased daytime operation hours and/or staffing
  • Extended street outreach
  • Increased promotion of existing services
  • Practical aid (clothing, water, food and blankets)
  • Safe places to temporarily seek refuge from extreme weather during the day

With wet and cold conditions continuing, South Australians are also encouraged to look out for people who may be sleeping rough and connect them with available support services where possible.

Anyone who is homeless, at risk of homelessness or concerned about a person sleeping rough can call Homeless Connect SA on 1800 003 308 to find out what support is available.

Available services and operating hours may differ between locations and change during the activation.
