Good Gilbert shares reopening news after disaster forced closure

Popular neighbourhood wine bar was missed this Mother’s Day weekend after a kitchen mishap left the dining room out of action.

Good Gilbert, the popular neighbourhood wine bar on Goodwood Road, was missed this Mother’s Day weekend after a kitchen mishap left the dining room out of action.

“Our oven’s gone full team ahead – literally – and given the kitchen and dining room a bit of an unplanned sauna session,” the team shared to Instagram.

The incident caused significant steam damage to the interior, forcing the the venue to temporarily close.

But in true Good Gilbert fashion, the team took it in stride. They took to social media with updates on the impromptu steam room reno, assuring followers the space is on the mend and thanking the behind the scenes help for the speedy recovery efforts.

“We’ll be closed for the time being while we sort things out and get everything back to normal,” they posted.

“We’re drying out, cleaning up and making sure the space is good to go. The good news? We’re making great progress and plan to be back next week, refreshed, reset, and ready to welcome you.”

Known for its charming, Eurocentric atmosphere, daily-changing menu and a stellar selection of over 300 local and international drops, Good Gilbert is a mainstay on Adelaide’s food and wine scene. It even claimed the title of Australia’s Best Wine Bar in Gourmet Traveller’s Annual Restaurants Awards.

The community out-pour was immediate following the news, and fans were quick to share their love and support on social media.

“So sorry to hear this happened. Hope you’re doing okay <3,” one follower wrote. Another added “You got this. It’s going to be better than ever.”

While the space gets a little TLC, the team has launched a line of GG hoodies – repping all three of their restaurants – so you can still wear your love for Good Gilbert while you wait to sip it.

With clean-up efforts in full swing, the perfect glass of chardy might not be too far off with the bar set to partially reopen later this week.

“We are hoping for a partial reopening of the front bar at the end of this week (building works dependant) and ideally a full reopening next week (upholstery and equipment delivery/ installation dependant,” explains owner Wilson Shawyer.

According to Wilson, the space will reopen “just as great as it was before,” but with a fresh lick of paint, a slight facelift, and different artwork due to some irreplaceable damage.

In the meantime, keep an eye on their socials for all the rescue mission updates.
