Adelaide weather forecast for Sunday June 28 and the days ahead

Adelaide is set for a calm Sunday before showers, gusty winds and possible thunderstorms roll in through the week.

Adelaide is heading into a grey, wet and increasingly wintry week, with showers building from Monday and a blustery midweek change set to bring the city’s coldest spell of the next seven days. While today stays fairly calm, the second half of the week looks much wetter, windier and cooler, especially from Wednesday into Thursday.

For Sunday, Adelaide is tracking partly cloudy with a top of 18 degrees and only a slight chance of rain, so it should be one of the more settled days of the week. Northeasterly winds will keep things moving, but conditions are expected to stay fairly dry across the metro area. That changes quickly on Monday, when cloud cover thickens and showers become much more likely. The Bureau is forecasting a very high chance of rain, with 3 to 10mm possible and a top of 17 degrees, making it a damp start to the working week.

Tuesday looks similar, though a little lighter, with cloudy skies and the chance of a shower or two, most likely in the morning. Adelaide’s temperature is expected to hold at 17 degrees again, keeping the city in a cool and subdued run of winter weather. By Wednesday, the week takes a more dramatic turn. Showers are expected to increase, a thunderstorm is possible through the morning and afternoon, and strong northerly winds will swing northwesterly as the day unfolds. Rainfall could reach 7 to 15mm, with gusty conditions set to make it feel even colder than the forecast top of 17.

Thursday is shaping up as the wettest and coldest day of the stretch. Showers are again very likely, rainfall totals could climb to 9 to 20mm, and temperatures are only forecast to reach 14 degrees. Strong northwesterly winds turning westerly will add to the wintry feel, so commuters and anyone heading outdoors will want the raincoat handy. Conditions begin to ease on Friday, though showers are still likely, particularly earlier in the day. Adelaide should reach around 15 degrees under partly cloudy skies, with winds gradually easing later. By Saturday, the city moves into a calmer pattern, with just a slight chance of a morning shower, light winds and a top of 15 degrees.

Across regional South Australia, the weather story follows a similar pattern, though there are a few sharper edges away from Adelaide. Morning fog is affecting some eastern districts today, while isolated showers are developing in the west and extending into central parts later on. There’s also the chance of a thunderstorm in the far west today, with more unsettled conditions spreading across the state early this week. Showers are possible in all districts on Monday, especially in the northeast, where thunderstorms may also develop. By Wednesday, showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to push east across the state before contracting to coastal areas later in the day. Rainfall totals are generally modest, but isolated falls of 10 to 20mm are possible across parts of Kangaroo Island, the southern Fleurieu Peninsula, western coasts and the pastoral districts, with 30 to 40mm possible with thunderstorms about the northeast.

For coastal communities and boaties, conditions will also become rougher through the middle of the week. Adelaide Metropolitan Waters remain relatively manageable today, but by Wednesday seas are expected to build to 1.5 to 2 metres during the afternoon as northwesterly winds strengthen.
