Adelaide is in for a fairly calm start to the week, but a much wetter and windier change is on the way, with showers building from Friday before a soggy weekend and early next week settle in across the city.
For today, Wednesday looks mostly quiet around Adelaide, with cloud increasing through the day and just a slight chance of a shower. It will be a cool one, with the city expected to reach 16 degrees, while patchy morning fog and the chance of frost linger about the hills and southern suburbs. Light winds will keep things fairly gentle, and conditions on local waters are also expected to stay smooth.
Thursday brings a brighter break, with a mostly sunny outlook and another cool start. Adelaide is forecast to dip to 9 degrees before reaching 17, and while there is still a slight chance of a shower, it should be a dry and pleasant winter day for most suburbs.
By Friday, the weather starts to shift. Adelaide should begin with a mostly sunny morning, but showers are expected to develop later in the day and into the evening. Temperatures will lift slightly to a top of 19 degrees, with northerly winds picking up to 15 to 25 km/h during the morning. It is the first sign of a stronger system edging closer to South Australia, and it will become more noticeable heading into the weekend.
Saturday looks set to turn properly wet, with a very high chance of showers and up to 15mm possible in the city. Cloudy skies and fresh northerly winds will make for a grey day across Adelaide, with a top of 17 degrees. Those near the metro coast can also expect choppier conditions, especially south of Port Noarlunga where seas are forecast to increase to 1 to 1.5 metres.
Sunday shapes as the most unsettled day of the stretch. Showers are expected to continue, rainfall could reach 10 to 30mm, and there is also the chance of a thunderstorm during the morning. Winds will strengthen from the north to northwesterly before swinging westerly during the day, which will make it feel colder, with the temperature only reaching 15 degrees.
Early next week stays showery. Monday remains cloudy with a high chance of showers and brisk west to northwesterly winds, with another top of 15 degrees. Tuesday brings little real relief, with more showers on the cards, a partly cloudy sky between bursts of rain, and a slightly milder top of 16 degrees. Overall, Adelaide’s seven-day run starts quietly but ends with a clear burst of classic late-winter weather, so it is worth making the most of the calmer conditions before Friday.
Across regional South Australia, the picture is a little more varied. Frost and possible fog are expected on and east of the ranges through Wednesday and Thursday mornings, with the chilliest inland spots seeing the coldest starts. Much of the state stays mostly dry through midweek, aside from the chance of isolated showers in the far west, Eyre Peninsula and some coastal parts.
By Friday, showers begin developing in the far west and spread east during the evening, with a chance of thunderstorms in the far west. Saturday brings the broader change, with showers elsewhere and areas of rain developing across the south during the afternoon, while the northeast is expected to stay dry. Rainfall totals to the end of Saturday are forecast to be 2 to 5mm across many districts, lifting to 5 to 10mm about agricultural areas, the west coast and North West Pastoral district, with isolated falls of 10 to 20mm possible about the Mount Lofty Ranges and the North West Pastoral district.
