Have you ever heard of the ‘Oasis Index’?
Developed by the Deutsche Bank Research Institute, and inspired by the iconic Oasis anthem ‘Cigarettes and Alcohol’, every year the index collates crowd-sourced data from around the world to compare the cost of five beers and two packs of cigarettes in cities globally.
This year’s data, however, makes for particularly sobering reading.
According to the figures, five beers and two packs of cigarettes in Melbourne will set you back a whopping $158.43 (AUD) while Sydney isn’t far behind at $156.01 (AUD) – more than double the cost of the same order in major cities like New York, and representing a near 90% increase compared to 2016 prices
While Adelaide wasn’t included in the data, it’s safe to say we’re feeling the pinch here too. But rather than dwelling on the rising cost of living, we’re choosing to focus on the silver lining – because when life gives you lemons, you… try and find the cheapest place to get a beer, of course. After all, even in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, no one should have to miss out on a pint with their mates.

Malt Shovel Taphouse Adelaide
Malt Shovel Taphouse Adelaide is pouring $8 imperial pints of any tap beer – including Guinness – from Wednesday to Friday between 4pm and 7pm.
Throw in sweeping views across Adelaide Oval and the River Torrens, and we’d argue it’s one of the best-value spots in the city to enjoy a beer in the afternoon sun.

Whilst a standard beer at Electra House Adelaide will usually set you back around $11, its weekday happy hours are where the real value lies.
Drop in Tuesday to Thursday from 4pm to 6pm, or Friday from 4pm to 9pm, and you can enjoy selected beers, wines and spirits for just $7.
