Adelaide is in for a cool, mostly dry run over the next week, with cloudy skies today giving way to sunnier days before showers return later in the weekend and early next week.
For today, Wednesday, the city will stay cloudy with a top of 16 degrees, and while there’s only a slight chance of rain, it’s shaping up as a brisk day with southerly winds turning southeasterly early and picking up to 20 to 30 km/h. Around the suburbs, temperatures will be a little cooler, with Mount Barker reaching just 13 degrees and coastal spots like Glenelg and Noarlunga topping out at 15 degrees. Sunshine returns quickly on Thursday, with Adelaide forecast to wake to a chilly 7 degrees before climbing to a much milder 19 degrees under clear skies. After that cold start, Friday looks even better, with another sunny day and a top of 21 degrees as light winds become northeasterly.
The warm-up continues into Saturday, when mostly sunny conditions are expected and the mercury heads for 23 degrees. Northeasterly winds will tend northerly through the morning before easing later in the day, making it the pick of the week for anyone heading outdoors. By Sunday, though, the pattern starts to shift. Adelaide is expected to see partly cloudy skies and a medium chance of showers, most likely in the morning, with a forecast top of 24 degrees. Rainfall totals look light, but it may be enough to dampen early plans.
Showers stay in the picture on Monday, with another partly cloudy day and a medium chance of rain developing later, ahead of a southwesterly change. Tuesday then looks cooler again, with a top of 19 degrees, gustier southerly winds and another chance of showers.
Across regional South Australia, conditions are more varied. Showers are expected in the west today, along with isolated thunderstorms in the far northwest, while most other districts stay dry apart from a few light coastal showers in the south during the morning. Thursday brings a cold start for central and eastern parts of the state, with patchy morning frost possible, while the far west holds onto a slight shower chance. By Friday, some eastern districts may wake to patchy fog, and isolated showers and thunderstorms are again possible in the far west.
Saturday is forecast to be dry statewide, with above average maximum temperatures becoming more widespread. Rainfall totals through to the end of Saturday are expected to stay under 2 mm across southern coastal districts, but western parts of the state have a better chance of seeing useful falls. The Bureau says 10 to 20 mm is likely over areas west of about Ceduna, with local heavier falls of 20 to 50 mm possible in the west of the North West Pastoral district. That means inland western communities will be the main ones watching for wetter conditions, while much of the rest of the state stays comparatively settled.
For coastal readers and anyone planning time on the water, Adelaide Metropolitan Waters look fairly manageable after today, with seas around 1 metre easing below that from Thursday. Conditions improve further into Friday and Saturday, though stronger winds are still affecting several coastal areas statewide.
