Adelaide is getting a new podcast this R U OK? Day that wants to move past the usual “I’m fine” and start talking about what’s really going on underneath.
The Parts We Hide launches on Thursday, September 10th, bringing together honest conversations about the experiences people often carry quietly, from mental health and grief to body image, relationships, loss and the pressure to appear like everything is under control.
Two Adelaide women with very different professional backgrounds host the podcast. Victoria Braithwaite is the founder of the nine-year-old local meal delivery business The Family Cook, and Dr Pennie Taylor is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Clinical Nutrition Scientist.
“After almost a decade working with Australian families through The Family Cook, I know first-hand the challenges people face every day,” said Victoria. “It’s a privilege to shine a light on the things people carry quietly – in a way that’s open, honest, raw and relatable, so people feel a little less alone.”
“We have more health information than at any other time in history, yet information alone doesn’t make us well,” said Dr Taylor. “Health happens in the messy in-betweens of our biology, our behaviour, our relationships and the lives we actually live. The Parts We Hide is where we’re going to have those conversations – you know, the real messy ones!”
Their first guest is John Mannion, CEO of the Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation, who joins the pair for the opening episode, The Brave Face.
The conversation explores what it can cost to look like you’re coping, with John also attending the podcast’s Adelaide launch on Thursday evening alongside the hosts and Mayor Jill Whittaker OAM from the City of Campbelltown.
The podcast has already attracted local support, with the City of Campbelltown coming on board as its Founding Community Wellbeing Partner.
Mayor Whittaker said the council was proud to support the initiative. “Council is extremely proud to support innovative local business initiatives that strengthen community health and wellbeing – and especially to support local women in business showing great leadership.”
The eight-episode first season will feature a range of Adelaide guests, including Burnside Hospital obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Beth Russ, mumamoo founder Charlotte Chambers, Miles Apart Foundation’s Annabel Bower and Resolve Divorce’s Rose Cocchiaro.
Their conversations will cover topics including fearless feeding, workplace isolation, divorce, pregnancy and infant loss, and women’s health.
The first two episodes will drop on launch day, with new episodes released weekly throughout the season.
And the Adelaide podcast is already looking further ahead, with seasons two and three in production and planned for release in November 2026 and January 2027.
