Citizen Of The Year Nominations Now Open

Do you know someone who makes your community a better place?

Adelaide City Council is seeking nominations for the Citizen of the Year Awards to recognise and reward individuals and organisations that have made a noteworthy contribution during the year, or given outstanding service over a number of years, to the City of Adelaide.

Categories include education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, environment, or any other area that adds to the advancement and wellbeing of a community.

“These awards are about acknowledging ordinary people doing the extraordinary in our community, going above and beyond the everyday to make a real difference,” said Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood.

“I encourage you to nominate anyone you think deserves to be rewarded for their efforts”.

Nominations can be made in any of the three categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (person must be under 30 years of age on 26 January 2012) and Community Event of the Year.

Nominees for the first two awards should have made a significant contribution to the community, be an inspirational role model, an Australian Citizen and had an impact on the City of Adelaide to be eligible.

Quality of event, effect on Council and contribution to the community are the selection criteria for the Community Event of the Year nominations.

Long serving Hutt Street Centre cook, Brenda McCulloch, received the Citizen of the Year award last year. She became the Centre’s first paid cook in 1995, and has prepared breakfast and lunch daily for more than 200 homeless and vulnerable people, serving well over one million meals.

“I was honoured to receive the award, two of my favourite things to do are helping people and cooking,” Brenda said.

“To be personally acknowledged just makes it all the more special,” she said.
