Eurowision Adelaide 2012 is Adelaide’s answer to the Eurovision Song Contest.
Complete with 'ditzy', glamorous D grade celebrity hostess, with legs that seem to go on for days and wearing a Liza Emanuele leopard print gown, Heidi (Carla Conlin) and a smarmy and ethically questionable host Uri (Andrew Crupi), the audience is treated to a fabulous array of Fringe performers taking on the roles as musical ambassadors for various European nations.
George Kapiniaris, performing in Comicus Erectus: The Ethnic Comedy Evolution, naturally represents Greece with a version of Play that Funky Music Greek Boy.
Jenny Wynter, representing Germany, had audience support with people waving flags for her version of Land Down Under or Landen Daunen Unter, ably accompanied by Leon Hewer. Wynter can be seen in An Unexpected Variety Show.
Croatia was represented by the Golden Phung from The Golden Phung’s Encycolpedia of Everything (Season Ended) with an interpretive dance air-band number, complete with 4 backup dancers and a goat.
The French offering, from James McCann, was a 'geeky', drunk version of Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien. McCann’s season of Awaiting My Moustache has ended.
Irishman Dave Callan and his Burlesque Beauties represented the UK, and provided a crowd favourite with their rendition of Single Ladies. The trio’s show Burlesque Beauties and Callan’s solo show The Psychology of Laughter have both finished their seasons.
The whip-cracking Svetlanka Seczkittenja was Serbia’s entry, eliciting a number of gasps from the audience as she toyed with two whips. Svetlanka’s show Svetlanka Seczkittenja Is Do Show has, however, finished.
The Russian entry, Jason Chong, from Jason Chong’s Mum provided an interesting wordless song.
The final entry with the song Surprise Sex was from Axis of Awesome representing Poland. They can also be seen in The Axis of Awesome World Tour 2006.
Throughout the show, as with the original televised version, each entry is announced with a “Postcard” of the country. Given the limited budget, this is done through interpretive dance and rhythmic gymnastics from a lycra clad Mark Trenwith, who can be seen in Mr Snott Bottom’s Stinky Still Show which further adds to the already hilarious show.
The show concludes with Heidi attempting to distract the audience with an Angelina flash of leg whilst Uri receives a suitcase and the details of the winner.
Whilst this show was a one off for the 2012 Fringe Season, hopefully it will be reprised at future Fringe Festivals.
