Eva: The music of Eva Cassidy’s World – 2012 Adelaide Fringe

Presented by Kim Spargo & The Collected Musicians

48 Lounge, part of The Big Slapple, is tucked away in the old convention centre building next to the Intercontinental Hotel. In the centre of the wide hall a broad stage is set up for a 7 piece band.

Starting with Let the Good Times Roll, lead singer Kim Spargo, backed by a group of very talented musicians, The Collected Musicians, sets an upbeat pace before framing the premise of the show; the songs of Eva Cassidy that shaped Eva’s life, and how Eva shaped Spargo’s life.

The 2 hour show, plus a 20 minute interval covers a range of songs and styles from Cassidy’s repertoire, with some impressive solos from the musicians.

Whilst this show is listed as Cabaret, it is more of a music show. Spargo does give a little of Cassidy’s history and her own connection to a couple of the pieces, including an amusing tale of her connection to The Wizard of Oz and Somewhere over the Rainbow. Spargo interacts well with her band and the additional vocals provided by the guitarist and percussionist showcase some new young talent.

With the way that the furniture was set up at 48 Lounge, the tables at the sides of the room had poor sight lines and when Spargo sat next to the Piano, stood behind it, or moved to the percussionist at the rear of the ensemble. It was difficult for the audience see her, and this distances them from the performance.

This is a show for anyone that is a fan of Eva Cassidy’s music, or people looking for a music gig to while away a pleasant evening.
