Mother’s Day is sneaking up on us, and if the last few months are anything to go by, it’ll be here before you know it and you’ll be very unprepared. Never fear though, because we’ve found the answer to the perfect gift for Mum (and you can also pick it up last minute), the Monet.
A Monet, we can hear you sobbing at the mere thought of attempting to purchase one of the Water Lillies series. We obviously don’t mean one of the paintings by the great Claude Monet, but instead one of the cheese by the great Kris Lloyd.
In 2006 Kris Lloyd, head cheese-wright at Woodside Cheeses, decided she would make a pretty cheese that would feature freshly seasonal edible flowers and herbs; a little like Monet’s garden. Woodside aptly named the cheese after the famous painter.
Many said to Lloyd, “…you know this will never work, it is definitely not something you will ever be able to commercialise.” Here we are some 12 years later and the cheese that would ‘never work’ has won a swag of awards including the prestigious Grand Dairy Award in 2012, has been tasted by Prince Charles & Camilla (twice) and is the most Instagrammed (and most popular) member of our cheese family.
Always ignore the skeptics.
The cheese is made with 5 day old chèvre (goat’s cheese) that is super creamy but with a gentle acidity – with a chilled white, ideal for an autumn picnic for mum (and maybe dad).
All the flowers are grown organically especially for Woodside Cheese and each cheese is decorated by hand making each Monet muck like the works of it’s namesake, a bespoke work of art.
If the Monet looks familiar, it’s because this work of art cheese is served up at many official South Australian functions in the shape of the South Australian Brand, and in the shape of love hearts for Valentine’s Day and weddings.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, the newly-boxed Monet is the perfect gift for Mum! Just add some croissants and bubbles, or set up a delightful picnic for lunch for her.
