A few very lucky students from a couple of Adelaide high schools have had the opportunity to work with David Campbell, preparing for a performance at the prestigious Adelaide Cabaret Festival. This night was the turn of students from Norwood Morialta High School to strut their stuff.

This group of young hopefuls did a great job, delighting the audience, who were not just friends and relatives. The standard of work was high and there was plenty of pace and variety. As these are young students just starting out and new to performing in a professional situation it would be unfair to critique as I would if they were professionals. Similarly, it would not be fair to single out individuals for comment.

The performers each introduced themselves and their song, some with reflection on their life and personal situation, occasionally quite poignant in their revelations, others with a lighter, often humorous tone. All but one, who accompanied herself at the piano, were assisted by a fine pianist who, unfortunately, went unacknowledged.

This was a very worthwhile addition to my list of events and certainly shows that cabaret has a future in the enthusiastic hands of an emerging new generation of talented performers. It is to be hoped that they all continue with what they have started.

Although I was unable to attend the performance myself, I am told by very reliable sources that Seaview High School students also put on a superb performance at their show the day before.
