Hip hop artists back campaign for respectful relationships

Hip hop artists Pez and Maya Jupiter will be spreading the message of respectful relationships to young people across Australia on their Change It For The Better tour.

The tour will be coming to Adelaide on Saturday May 28th at the Governor Hindmarsh.

Pez and Maya Jupiter joined hundreds of school students at Fort Street High School in Sydney yesterday to launch the tour on the Centenary of International Women’s Day.

The tour is part of the Australian Government’s The Line campaign, which is a $17 million Australian Government initiative to encourage respectful relationships in an effort to reduce the incidence of relationship violence.

Launched last June, the four-year campaign uses social media, youth media and music to reach young people.

“The Line is all about encouraging young people to think about what behaviour is acceptable in a relationship and what crosses the line,” Minister Ellis said.

“Through the campaign we are speaking to young people on their own turf, using their preferred methods of communication, to get the message through that everyone needs to make sure they show respect to themselves and others.”

The Line is expected to reach an estimated 3.2 million Australians, including more than 2 million teenagers.  With more than 47,000 Facebook friends already, The Line has started a conversation among young people about harmful behaviours and the importance of respectful relationships.
Pez and Maya Jupiter’s four-week tour, starting in May, will see the pair perform all-ages shows in a mix of venues across Australia. As part of the tour, Pez and Maya will also be conducting master song writing classes in some high schools.
“The Line is trying to do something positive, promoting respect and breaking the cycle of violence in all its forms,” Pez said.

“But more than anything, I like the fact that it’s going about it in a way that really connects with young Aussies.”

Maya Jupiter said she was happy to be promoting The Line as part of the tour.

“One in three women has experienced physical violence since the age of 15, and almost one in five has experienced sexual violence,” Maya Jupiter said. “

“This must change. I want to be part of the movement that promotes a culture of respectful relationships. No woman should live in fear. That’s why I support The Line.”

Today’s event also marked the launch of Shine – a song and video by Pez – and Phenomenal – a song and video by Maya Jupiter.

The day also included the presentation of winners of the Shine competition, in which young people were invited to submit a self-portrait for inclusion in the song’s music video.
