Since opening in 1991, Korea Restaurant on Goodwood Road has become an institution, bringing authentic Korean cuisine to Adelaide at a time when it was much harder to find around the city.

As Adelaide’s first Korean BBQ restaurant, Korea Restaurant has spent more than 35 years building a reputation for authentic flavours, traditional hospitality and consistency, with the team explaining that many of their customers now return alongside their children – and even grandchildren.

Located at 133 Goodwood Road, the restaurant has built its name on premium cook-your-own BBQ, including its renowned marinated beef, pork belly and wagyu selections, alongside Korean fried chicken, kimchi soup, rice and noodle dishes, traditional side dishes, and banquet menus for larger groups.

Now, the family-run restaurant is adding a new chapter to its story, hoping to capture a new generation of customers with a style of dining that’s exploding in popularity across Adelaide: hotpot.

“We’ve had many customers asking whether we’d ever offer hotpot, so we decided to introduce it as a trial,” shares owner Sahil.

While Korean BBQ remains at the heart of the business, the new takeaway hotpot concept is testing the waters to see whether a Korean BBQ and hotpot crossover could become a permanent fixture on the menu.

Rather than offering traditional table-cooked hotpot, each order will be freshly prepared in the kitchen before being packaged for takeaway or pickup, making it an easy option for those wanting restaurant-quality hotpot without the cooking.

For the initial launch, the menu will feature a signature soup base alongside a dry pot option. Diners can customise their meal with a selection of premium meats, fresh seafood, vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, noodles and other ingredients, creating a personalised bowl packed with authentic Korean flavours.

The restaurant hopes customer feedback will help shape the future of the concept, with plans to expand the range of soup bases and flavours if the trial proves popular.

Sahil explained that authenticity has always been its guiding principle.

“We respect the traditions and recipes that have made Korea Restaurant a local favourite for over three decades,” she said.

“At the same time, we keep listening to our customers and introducing new ideas that enhance the dining experience. It’s about evolving while never losing the authenticity that built our reputation.”

“When Korea Restaurant first opened, many people had never experienced Korean cuisine,” Sahil continued.

“Today, Korean food has become part of Adelaide’s vibrant dining scene. People are much more familiar with traditional dishes, are keen to explore different flavours, and appreciate the culture and experience that Korean food brings.”

It’s a trend reflected across the city, with Adelaide’s Korean dining scene continuing to expand through venues including SOOT, Bornga, SO Urban BBQ and K-BabyQ. Yet despite the influx of new restaurants, Korea Restaurant continues to hold its own.

For the family behind the restaurant, continuing that legacy is something they don’t take lightly.

“It’s both an honour and a responsibility,” they said.

“We understand that Korea Restaurant holds many special memories for our loyal customers, and we’re proud to continue that legacy while introducing the restaurant to a new generation of diners.”

The new hotpot trial will launch soon and will initially be available exclusively for takeaway and pickup, with orders available via Uber Eats, DoorDash, YumboJumboo or by phone.
