With warmer weather incoming, Pizzateca has announced an exciting scoop: they will be opening a gelato store this Spring.

The new store, named ‘Gelateca,’ a fun spin-off of the classic Pizzateca name, will be located right next door to Pizzateca on Chalk Hill Road in McLaren Vale.

The gelato store is a collaboration between co-owners Vito and Tony Mitolo and gelato maker Andrea Calabrese. Vito and Tony are a father-son duo and Andrea is from Vieste, Italy, with experience making gelato in locations stretching as far as London, Puglia and Melbourne.

“Gelato is something that has been on our radar since we’ve started,” says co-owner Tony Mitolo.

“Pizza and gelato go hand in hand, we are so lucky to have a great following of all ages. So many people come in to Pizzateca for takeaway as well, so now they can grab a 1/2 litre of tub of gelato to take home with them so they’ve got dessert sorted as well.”

“The space was away there, but now we’re working with Andrea we can make it happen. It has been a long time coming so we are excited. Everything that is being served is made right there- that is really important to us. We can do everything but milk the cows.”

They have kept the gelato menu simple, just like their pizza menu- and Tony says all flavours will be at the top of their game and as good as they can possibly be.

The range of 12 flavours may surprise you. You’ll be able to get classic Italian flavours which are essential on any gelato menu, such as dark chocolate, hazelnut and pistachio, along with more adventurous ones for those with daring tastebuds.

Tony says they plan to play around with a limoncello flavour- a mildly alcoholic sorbet gelato- and chilli honey gelato.

“They are still very much anchored in tradition but a bit adventurous,” Tony says.

You can choose to get your gelato in a cup, cone, or even a cake- cakes will be able to be pre-ordered and fully customised. And for those with dairy-free or gluten-free requirements who want a taste, there will be dairy-free sorbet on the menu along with gluten-free cones.

The colour palette used throughout the new space is green, white and pink, with an eye-catching striped counter front adding some fun. This team’s passion for authentic Italian tastes will offer not just gelato, but no doubt a delightful experience which will transport you to a sunny Italian piazza.

“The idea is people can sit down, grab a pizza, have a cocktail and some sides, then head next door to grab some gelato and enjoy your dessert in the sun on the deck or lawn,” Tony says.

Pizzateca prides themselves on their Neapolitan-style pizza is made thin with a soft, airy crust and is made by hand- keeping things traditional with no rolling pins, before being fried in their wood oven.

The pizzeria prides themselves on making their pizzas using techniques passed down from generation to generation using locally sourced ingredients.

Expect to see a pop-up gelateca alongside the Pizzateca pop-up at Silver Sands.
