Get around a little culture this month at Event Cinema Marion, as they show Puccini’s Tosca (about the very real 1800’s threat of a Napoleonic invasion into Rome) live from the Royal Opera House in London.

Continuing its stellar program in 2018, Event Cinemas in partnership with Trafalgar Releasing will exclusively screen Tosca next month at 17 cinemas as part of the Royal Opera House 2017/18 Live Cinema Season (10, 11, and 14 March). Here in Adelaide, Event Cinemas Marion will be showing the famously chilling operatic thriller by Puccini, and you won’t need those fancy opera binoculars.

Featuring filmed performances from the world-renowned Royal Opera House in London, the program presents the very best opera and ballet from the iconic venue, captured in jaw-dropping detail for Australian audiences to enjoy as if they were there themselves.

Drama, passion and fabulous music take centre stage in Puccini’s operatic thriller Tosca. With a star cast, Jonathan Kent’s enthralling production captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800, featuring police chief Scarpia, one of opera’s most malevolent villains. See below for a brief synopsis of the story.

Puccini’s thrilling Tosca is a story of love, terror, the abuse of power, and the unquenchable longing for freedom. When an escaped political prisoner takes refuge in a church, an opera singer and a painter are drawn into a twisting plot that puts them at the mercy of the secret police and its network of torturers and spies. Rivalling the splendour of Franco Zeffirelli’s Napoleonic-era sets and costumes, Sir David McVicar’s ravishing new production offers a splendid backdrop for extraordinary singing. Sonya Yoncheva stars as the titular prima donna, alongside Vittorio Grigolo as her artist lover and Bryn Terfel as the villainous police chief—one of his signature roles. Andris Nelsons conducts.

Tickets for the screening will be available closer to the screening though the Event Cinemas Marion website.
