For the last sixty years, Northern Light Theatre Company has been producing some of South Australia’s leading theatre productions. This weekend they will celebrate their diamond anniversary with a spectacular night of entertainment.
Northern Light Theatre Company’s (NLTC) president, Sue Pole, spoke to Glam Adelaide about the company’s huge sixtieth celebration this year, her favourite memories of working with the company, and ways people can become involved with the company.
NLTC is part of the thriving theatre community here in Adelaide and has become an important part of so many people’s lives, as Sue discussed with Glam Adelaide.
“Theatre companies are great places for anyone, from age 9 to 90 (and more!), to come along and be a part of a community that fosters inclusion and acceptance of people from all ages, backgrounds, and experience, while having a lot of fun – whether that be in rehearsing and performing or working in one of the many behind the scenes roles. It’s a great team effort to put on a show and it’s very rewarding being a part of that team.”
Sue has had many years of involvement with NLTC, and we asked if she had any favourite memories.
“There are way too many to mention here, but some favourite roles include Roxie in Chicago, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, and Anne in Half a Sixpence. Favourite shows I have choreographed for NLTC include Les Mis, Jersey Boys, Oklahoma, and most recently the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Some of the after-show parties were also memorable, to say the least.”
Companies like NLTC are more than just a hobby for so many people; they foster a community and quickly become like a family, drawing people back to be involved both on and off the stage.
“We have a great team supporting the company with sets, costumes, lighting, etc., which directors tell us makes their job much easier. I think because we get good creative teams it follows that we get a good cast, and both of these lift the standard of the show. Our audiences certainly seem to appreciate the quality of what’s on offer as they keep coming back, thankfully!”
This Saturday night, 5th September, NLTC will hold a night of celebrations looking back on the productions they have produced over the last sixty years, as well as looking to the future.
“The 60th celebration is basically going to be a big party where current and past casts, creatives, crew, and audience members can get together and reminisce, while having a few drinks and being entertained by some of the best talent around.”
Hosted by Rohan Watts and with musical direction by Matthew Rumley, NLTC has assembled some of the company’s past cast members with an incredible program of songs from the company’s rich sixty years of performances.
NLTC will also be presenting the South Australian amateur theatrical production of Disney’s blockbuster Frozen The Musicalin October this year, as wells the SA premiere of The Promin 2027.
The company is always looking for new people to join their casts and extended team.
“NLTC produces two musicals per year, for which we hold auditions. Details of information sessions are posted on our Facebook page for each show, and an information pack is available after the Info Night for anyone interested in auditioning. Keep an eye out for the Info Night for The Prom, coming up on 13th September.”
Northern Light Theatre Company’s sixtieth birthday celebration will be held in the Playford Civic Centre’s Function Room on Saturday, September 5, at 7:00 p.m.
